Need GPS for car&hiking for my mam!

My mam isn't the best with directions on the roads so she could do with getting a GPS system in her car. She also does a lot of hiking and would like a GPS device to help with navigation for that - last week their hike leader got them lost by having their compass upside down. So I'd like to buy a suitable system for her.

Are there any GPS devices that she could have setup nicely in the car and then easily detach it to take with her on her hikes (would need good battery life)?

Also, I've literally no idea about different GPS systems - are there any good guides I can read to find out what to look for, what to avoid etc? I'm looking into buying one for my own car so need to understand the basics and couldn't find it here.

Unfortunately the selection isn't to great when looking for dual purpose car/hiking GPS receivers. You need something that has a long battery life, is waterproof, and will take a knock or two...

I use the Garmin Quest for this purpose, but it is an older model GPS receiver (but still available from GPS Warehouse in the UK, and works with the latest Garmin maps..)

After that, you're looking at the more expensive models like the Garmin GPSMAP 60..

Thi is the model that I have and it does every thing that you could possibly want as far as using it for hiking type use as well as road navigation. But in no way would I consider it particuarly user freindly for someone who is a bit of a technophobe, and although it does the road navigation you do not get any of the voice directions that you would with the specific car type models. The road navigation has worked OK for us when the person in the passenger seat is providing the voice though to read the instructions that it gives.

Thanks for the info - looks like the one for my Mam will require a bit more investigating.

Any suggestions for what might suit me for my car - only drive in Ireland so need great coverage for Ireland only, would like it to have audio (and ability to turn audio off), and have a car kit (i.e. cradle and charger). Other than that I've no idea on what they offer and what I'm looking for.

I'm going to be ordering some PC parts from here so would get the GPS there also if it was good value - is there anything on this section that I should be interested in?

Please ignore this thread - I've just noticed the Best gps options 4 Ireland thread so I'll post in there.
