For those of you who own Nikon cameras, how reliable are they? Are you likely to have to use the warrenty within the year? I was looking to buy one from a guy who doesnt have a warrenty (camera bought abroad) and was wondering if it's a good idea? I know it's risky but I'm hoping after we inspect it and if nikons are likely to be quite sturdy then it might be worth it since I really cant afford to get one new!

Nikon D40 with a sigma UV filter and flower lense hood and anti-scratch uv lcd protector, got it down to 450

nikons are very reliable. canon and them dominate the slr arena...but d40 tho... it lacks internal motor, d50 is probably cheaper at this point and better

I could probably sell you my Canon EOS 300D, with standard kit lens, for €300.
    I'll even throw in a 1GB SanDisk Ultra® II CompactFlash®.
Might even be tempted to let the Lowepro Nova shoulder bag go with it, if I can get a new Vertex 100 AW somewhere soon.

Literally everybody I know who owns a Canon 350D has had a problem with it.
My Nikon D70 is very sturdy, despite it's knocks and bumps, still snapping away.
    If it's between 350D and a D50, D50 every time.
If you have doubts, insure it,

I've had 2 Nikon film cameras for the last 7 years, never a problem. I've now got a Nikon digi (D200) since Feb this year, chosen for it's rock-solid performance.

Don't know much about the D40 but if it looks like it's been treated right, I'd say you'd be ok. Obviously you should give a test-drive before parting with your cash...

Why would it be between the 350D, when the 400D is on the market since last September? The 400D wipes the floor with anything Nikon could throw at it!

Because somebody is trying to sell him one...
I'll just ignore your other foolish comment.

Interesting. I own a 350D for the last year, and I've taken 15,000 shots with it, it was bought in Hong Kong en route for Australia, it takes a fair amount of punishment as 90% of the photographs I take are from the beach and often in less than clement weather conditions such as from the top of a cliff in horizontal wind and rain in Brittany last Tuesday and I have had zero trouble with it so far. I know quite a few people with 350Ds and not one of them has had a problem with the camera.

    Sorry, everybody but one.
5 out of 6 people I know who have Canons have had to get them either repaired or replaced.
Luck of the draw I guess.

Anyone know what the going rate is for a D50 then?

City Exile: Not sure about the 350D havent really heard anything about it?

Think the guy is going with someone else since I can't meet up until the end of the week but I'm still hoping to get a DSLR anyway so keep it coming with the advice!

Im new to photography really and have been having a browse around some shops. The Canon eos 400d - how much would you expect to pay for it. I've seen a difference of 200 euro in two shops next door to each other.

I have the D80 and no problems, it's a solid build. Also it is up to the owner to look after the camera! Personally I would like to know the seller and know how they look after their equipment before I buy something from them.

i have a d50, lovely camera, check the link in my sig for samples from it, tis a grand old camera, takes a fair few knocks without falling, i shoot alot of rock and punk gigs where the camera gets banged about, never a problem(well 2 lens broke but that was the lens not the camera)

And thus the floor was opened to Yet Another DSLR-Evangelist Flame War...

If I was you, with no prior investment in any of the big names, therefore no pre-existing lenses/other kit that I'd want to match up with a compatible body, I'd scour the net looking at reviews and make your own mind up.
There are some folk here who need only the whiff of the mention of either Nikon or Canon to vent forth on why their choice of camera is the One True Brand and all others should Melt In Hell(tm). For some it's a form of religion and all religions attract nutters.

Make your own mind up based on your needs and bank balance.

You've been paying too much attention to Oriel.
    I offered you a 300D, not a 350D.

The basic story is, I have a 300D in my bag, which doesn't get used much anymore, since I typically only bring one camera out with me.
It's a good camera to start
If you're interested, I could give you a lend of it, to play around with.
I'm not under pressure to sell it so I wont shed a tear if you say no.

Woah don't want to start any kind of turf war here!! Ideally I'd like to stay 600 euro or below budget-wise. I was looking at some reviews for the Nikon D50 and overall it seems to be really good but am still looking for a price on it, no online irish stores seem to have it listed.

City Exile: PM-ed you about your 300D
