Hi, can anyone tell what a "data error (cyclic redundancy check)" is. I'm trying to transfare photo's on to an external drive for storage and I'm getting this message concerning one particular photo,I've deleted the photo put still keep getting the message, which also shuts down the copying so I cant manage to transfare the rest of the photo's I want to. I've already managed to transfare over 20 gigs of photo's, this one pic is spoiling the show, Any help.

A cyclic redundancy check, or CRC, is a method of error checking data... its typically used when sending data over a network to check for corruption in the Data. The CRC is calculated over the packet and appended onto the end of the data. When the host recieves the data it checks the data packet against the CRC and makes sure no corruption has happened.

CRCs can also be used for checking file integrity.

You'll have to give us a bit more details about the error, is it a windows error ect... Can you try open the file and save it in a different format, or the same format?

This query should probably be on 'Computer & Technology'.

If you see a CRC error while doing a file copy in Windows then the most likely issue is that you have a bad block on either the source or destination hard disk. You can download drive testing utilities from the manufacturers of the drives.

Thanks for the replies Guys, sorry if it's in the wrong place. I'm running windows, the pic was saved ,actually 3 copies of the pic was saved, a tiff and 2 jpg's, all of which i deleted, but I still get the error message with the name of the pic, ie,img 3919-1.The message and effects is just stopping me storing several hundred pics which I dont just want to delete because trawling both drives to figure out which files are not saved could take me months. I'm confused as to how, given that the offending file is deleted,I am still getting the message.

Actually I put a bunch of reports in a rar archive and being paranoid password protected it. It got damaged so now there is a CRC error about half way through the extraction.

I've tried repairing the archive to no avail and what is extracted is readable so I'd love it if there was any way to dump the contents of the archive disregarding the errors but winrar wont let me and any software that will do it isn't free and I'm not willing to go through the hassle of buying it over the internet.

I'll just move this over to Computers & Technology.

What are you copying from? The CRC errors I've experienced are usually caused by corrupt hardware (scratched CD's). You should be able to select all files that aren't the one that's failing the CRC and copy them over or, failing that, give isobuster a go. It's magic at ignoring CRC checks. :)
