I nearly wet myself when i heard!!! :D

The website is great, loads of great content already! Trailer is cool.

Doesn't say anything about a release date! cannot be far off though as they will already have a gameplay trailer up by the end of may!

If you guys need a cold dose of cyncism you should check out the official forums. Apparently the end is nigh, SC2 sucks and SC1 is much much better. Predictable stuff really.

TBH, Blizzard will have to perform an absolute miracle with this one - when they deliver a quality game rather than a life changing event an awful lot of people are going to be underwhelmed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

they always said the whole reason they haven't done it before now is cause it would be close to impossible to live up to SC

Bah! For me Starcraft was a blend of great balance and excellent storytelling. Many modem games were played with friends, but it was never the defining strategy game for me. If it turns out to be a good game with a great production values and storyline, that's all I need. When have Blizzard not surpassed themselves?

However, their policy of "its done when its done" is starting to bug me. Yes, we have all been let down by continuously pushed back release dates, or games rushed to meet an xmas release. But this game is looking very polished and even a ballpark release date would be nice.

People are expecting so much from this game as the first game was such class. I think they will find it very hard to better SC1 with this release.

That may have been why they waited 10 years: Now they have an entirely new market of gamers to cater to - I know ever more that have never played Starcraft.

Even if they fail to woo the First Generation you can imagine they will still make enough to profit from the make: More gamers to cater to; a much more diverse group than was present back 10 years ago - the gaming industry has Orgasmed to life since then with PS2s and Xbox Live! and now its even penetrating the adult and senior market (you heard me) with the Wii. Thats reason 1 for waiting this long.

Reason 2: The state of technology. They much confirmed it with Brood Wars that there was no honest way of evolving the series on an isolinear, 2D platform - simply because they got it right the first time. A very, very large demographic of the SC population never really embraced Brood Wars. Granted it was an expansion but it still didnt bode well.
The next logical step was 3D but they knew that was still a long time off: they were many years before WC3 launched, and even then if you can imagine a direct 3D port of Starcraft into that engine (there has been at least one) it doesnt actually look that good.

Reason 3 - The market, again I suppose: Look at all the RTSs that have come out in the last 10 years: AoE2/3, RoN, C&C: Generals, DoW; all of them have brought new thinking to the table and blizzard was especially well known for innovative thinking (they pioneered the Building Queue unless my information is false) and it takes a lot to live up to that; and then again with the reputation of the Franchise in mind - anything you add has to be perfectly balanced or near enoug to it, as it was with Starcraft: and the more that had to be added to a modern day release VS that of 10 years ago is a dramatic increase which involves (in terms of games design) an exponentially higher amount of time spent to keeping the game fair balanced and most importantly: fun.

We should be so grateful that they waited this long and didn't bow to the pressure of the community: When has any game rushed into service ever been half of its true potential?

Starcraft II may never live up to the once God-like glory of its predescessor, but it will still be memorable.

Supreme Commander has nukes. Nukes I tell you. Big explodey ones.

It is therefore the best rts. Don't argue with me mister.

Lol how little you know, back when TA and SC were released the most common age group playing online were 35 - 40. in a year of playing TA nearly every night of the week 95% were at least 10 years older than me.

Ye what? its a great game. certainly the best RTS available now

It may never live up to the perception of SC1, but it would pretty difficult to make a game worse than its 10 year old prequel - if SC1 was released today and put up against the current RTS market as "Generic RTS Title" it would sink like a stone. I think SC2 will be better than SC1, but the trick will be having it recognised as being better.

Wouldnt make any difference though what date youre told itll be released. Itll be released when its released. Chill.

Would you believe I only found out about this today! It got a mention in Newsweek, and like many people here I almost wet myself (figuratively of course).

I hardly ever play computer games these days but I will be booking some days off to play this (and I'm sure Korea will declare a national holiday).

hmm have the old one never bothered playing it tbh, when i got it i had warcraft 3, and visually now, sc looks dated and poor.

Might go giving it another look, but im a wc3 fanboy

SC1 is definitely worth a dig in a bargain bucket - its dirt cheap.

cant wait for this: now you can upgrade your Terran Command centre with a Turret and the ability to transport SCVs - great for those classic island maps.

I got starcraft 1 and the expansion in the one box for 15quid,anyone play the expansion?any good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

Its pretty much essential, the Medic, Corsair and Lurker all radically alter gameplay, and imo for the better. Dark Templars are also very nice, and the campaign is pretty solid too.

how many expansions are there for the oringinal game?i just have brood war!! did'nt think there was anymore....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

    Theres only Brood War.

but there is also insurrection which is a campaign add on.

then there is the gundam expansion for those who like starcraft to mix with gundam.

    along with various other add-on's/mod's.

but the only official and real game altering one was broodwar.

Play have the release date as 28/03/08, probably not at all reliable but something to hope for.

Strangely enough I found my Brood war CD randomly yesterday.

If anyone else wants a "I havent played this game in about 6 years but wouldnt mind giving it another go" type game sometime, drop me a pm.

    I lost my CD's when I moved house :(

Still have it installed and can play single player/skirmish, but when I formatted a while back I lost the registry entries and now I cant play multiplayer.
