Just got an email from isservices telling me that vista is now ready to be connected to the college network.

In fairness, I thought this might be a bit premature. There has been so many problems with windows vista

IS Services are pleased to announce that students in college residences (main campus and Dartry Hall) and Library communal areas will be able to connect their Microsoft Windows Vista computers to the College network via the self service network access control system from Monday, May 21st. The self service network access control system ensures that your computer meets a number of security requirements such as having up-to-date operating system patches and antivirus software. Once connected to the College network, students can also apply for connection to the College wireless network for their Microsoft Windows Vista computers. It is currently not possible to connect a Microsoft Windows Vista computer in College offices and labs.

I'm going to guess that everyone else did too.

Such as? Way to get a debate going without actually giving any points.

I think it took too long. Vista was available for testing long before its retail release. I think the technologies involved in connecting to a domain are standardised and file/print sharing surely hasn't changed much, or at least Vista would be backwards compatible.

    In fairness.

I just came across minutes from an isservices meeting last year in which the osd ross brought up the subject of difficulties with vista implementation. Obviously he was correct in a lot of his views. I'm reluctant to go near vista tbh, I'm going to finish these exams and back up all my college stuff and all the crap I have on my computer, format the drive and install ubuntu again.

As the man said... vista has numerous pretty harsh flaws, but em none of them i can think of off hand have the slightest impact on ISS allowing it on the network. Infact i doubt they really had to change anything except probably add a new option to some form, like alan said i'm pretty sure they use the same domain protocols(though i don't think these are even being used with undergrad's anymore).....

What impact does this copying and deleting flaw (which seems to be works on network drives) have on network traffic, I wonder...

the copying/deleting slowly flaw? its not going to generate network traffic by its nature....if anything it causes the network loads to be more stable rather than spiking with big file transfers i spose. There is a hotfix ms will give ye if ye ask nicely enough(not sure if it was made into a patch ever...)
    its on :

Apparently that hotfix doesnt really work - the copying flaw still occurs. was having a read up on a few things - personally wont be going near vista til a service pack emerges - Did the same for XP.

aye well same i've no intention of going near vista, but that flaw won't have any ill effect on the network...

(also apparently disabling the indexing service gets around the flaw)

Have any of you tried to connect to an un-named wireless network yet in Vista? Try adding authentication onto that.

I know I shouldn't have, but I had a Vista laptop in college over the last few weeks, and tried getting it on the wireless (MAC address spoofing is so easy). No joy.

Plugged it in in one of the labs, spoofed the MAC of the machine that was plugged into that point, and it worked a charm.

I have Vista. Are any of the problems security-based or are they just bugs? I'm running AVG.

The only bug I've noticed is that my cursor occasionally takes on a bold appearance/complexion, its shadow about five times thicker than it usually is.

pretty much bugs, a few security issues, but nothing amazing, aslong as you grab the patches you'll be fine...
