I'm sorry mods, this is probably the wrong place for this issue but I don't know where it would be better suited. Please move as appropriate.

Basically I was wondering if I can claim rent relief for the campus apartment that I've been staying in this year? Also can I claim for the house I stayed in last year? I don't have any receipts from the landlord, I just paid into his account every month or two. Anyone know how this works?

You can claim if the Landlord(s) registered and paying tax on rental income, I think but I'm not 100% positive that you can claim back tax relief, maybe someone can confirm this for you. You need to get a form to complete from the Revenue. You can get the info from their website www.revenue.ie and also download the forms.

You'll need your landlord's PPS number. Once you have that, you don't need receipts.

You don't necessarily need the landlords PPS number as long as you have the full name and address.

What exactly qualifies one for rent relief in the 1st place. I didn't think student could claim rent relief.

AFAIR you have to pay income tax to qualify. Have a look on revenue.ie to confirm.

Thanks for the tips lads. Has anyone actually claimed rent relief? As a student preferably? Cause I lived in two different places the last two years its a little bit more complicated to fill out the forms. I might just call the residence office to find out if I can claim for the student accomadation.

I just used PAYE online to claim mine. Made the process as simple as can be. Before the online system, I never managed to complete the forms.

Cool thanks, don't have my revenue pin at the minute but will have a look for it when I go home in a day or two.

Probably better suited to State Benefits.

You need to be paying tax in the first place to get rent relief.

You get the adjustment through your tax credits.

If you are part-time working, I presume you can get it (again check this out). Not if you are a student and not working (you do not state you are working).

Just an update, my sister rang the tax office and they said she could claim rent relief. She specifically said she was a student, but the one on the phone checked with someone else in the office and said it was ok. On the form it doesn't say that you have be paying tax, only that you need to be renting accomadation. I'm fairly sure people on the dole can claim it, and they don't pay tax.

You are definately not able to claim rent relief as a student.

How would they adjust your tax credits? i.e you see the relief in your salary. I suggest that you look into this further.........

I guarantee you that she will apply for rent relief, and you will get a letter back saying that "you need to be working".

Unemployed people cannot claim rent relief either. Again, how can your tax credits be adjusted when you dont pay tax? (think about it).

People on the dole/stamps etc can claim Rent Allowance, if they meet the requirements.

Rent Allowance and rent relief are 2 different things.

Go to http://www.revenue.ie/ and type in "Rent Relief" then READ the form (it explains how relief is given towards the end).

Can parents claim rent relief if they're paying rent for dependent children? I pay my own rent, but they pay my brother's (different courses, different workloads, and he works all weekend every weekend at home, whereas I don't) so if they could claim rent relief for the rent they've paid for him, it'd be great!
