    Hi, what programmes can I download that will let me know my systems performance?

    Windows will give you a good idea. ctrl+alt+del and then select task manager lets you see lots of things.
    Processor use, memory use and applications running.

    It will give you usage history for the cpu, ram and networking. You can also check the system logs for problems with your machine through Control panel> Administrative tools> Event viewer.

    3dmark you can download the 2001version free if my memory serves me correct, this is what i use for building systems to determine the gains from standard to overclock.

    Cpu-z is a good program for seeing information on your processor. Another handy program when overclocking.

    SiSoftware Sandra is similar to 3dmark and is used again for system benchmarking and is used by alot of reviewers

    google + search for "benchmarking software" will sort you out with a good few links

    All of those are synthetic benchmarks so treat the results with caution, if you know the specifications of the computer then you can get a fairly decent idea of where it stands.
