Well I have the S5500 my brother has the S5600 and both cameras are amazing. I would go for the S5700 as there isn't much in the price difference and you might as well get what improvments are going.

The S5700 has a bigger screen (2.5" compared with 1.8")and is more compact than the S5600 (but can't be by much). It takes both xD and SD cards (S5600 only takes xD) and it has a 7MP sensor. If these don't appeal to you go for the S5600 but personally I would buy the newer S5700.

    Press Release here: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0702/07022210fujis5700.asp

I am a big fan of Fuji cameras and don't think you can make much of a mistake when buying their cameras.

I'm presuming that you mean the Fuji s5700 when you say s7000 in that last post Woop. Its s700 in the US but the s7000 is a different camera entirely. I'm considering getting a 5700 also so I'd be very interested to hear if anyone has any experience of using it too. I've read alot of mixed opinion on it. Purple fringing and poor performance in low light seem to be the main complaints. The only decent review (ie. not a short Amazon type review) that I came across was here :
    http://www.rovago.com/fujs700.html
There are sample pics there too.

Also wondering if anyone could enlighten me on this point. On Pixmania the Aperature on the 56000 is described as
    Aperture: f3.2 - f8
    Shutter Speed :15 - 1/2000 sec

On the 5700 it is :
    Aperture :f/3.5-3.7
Shutter speed: from 1/1000 to 4 secs
2 sec or 10 sec self timer

Does that mean that the 5700 represents a large loss of options as regards aperature or am I missing something here?

Nope, it's a better bet. The first figure will represent max aperture at the wide end of the zoom and the second will represent max aperture at the long end of the zoom. Having a max aperture of f3.7 means you can use that and anything else above it in the chain (including f8). So you're actually getting much more leeway with the 5700.

The aperature entry for the 5600 is wrong.. sort of. F/8 is the minimum aperature, but it can be much wider at max zoom...

check www.dpreview.com for the proper figure. It was the s5200 in the states.

how about the canon powershot A710??

    http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canona710is/

I looked at that one too John 1981. It has a 6x optical zoom however and the Fuji as a 10x. Thank you Roen and bp_me for the replies to my question. It cleared up an important stumbling block in this decision :)

alas but still the find for someone who actually owns a s5700 is incomplete

Alas, it looks as though it might remain so too Woop... unless you buy one and road test it for us all:D Or we could both just keep jabbering back and forth about it in the name of ensuring this thread doesn't fade to obscurity before someone else DOES actually buy it.

    The Fuji s6500
    http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/382527/art/fuji/finepix-s6500fd.html
Its more expensive and its bulky but it gets very good reviews. Have you considered it, Woop? Anyone have any experience of it ? Would it be serious over kill for a beginner?
