    Hi,
I am living in galway, and currently have NTL ( basic pacakge ) its snowy somtimes, rte sound is terrible other times, and tg4 goes weird alot. Is it just me or are ntl not very good?

I have been thinking about getting a new provider, is ntl digital any better/good. Also can someone explain to me exactly what is incurred when getting sky with HD, is there a dish, a box, hard to set up, costly?

I mean i would like to know how much it costs after everthing and is it worth it, and what is the best ( but not too dear/big ) tv for HD with sky.

I know im asking a lot, but websites and helplines are just a curse to get good info from.
    Thanks:

First off its worth saying that google is your friend in this case - there is tons of information available in this area. If after searching you have specific questions (it can be difficult to work out the Sky options for example) then is the time to post to a forum.

Having said that, some general pointers. I have NTL Digital, had analogue, have seen basic Sky and Sky HD. In my expereince, NTL Digital is *miles* better than analogue. To my eyes, it is also better than Sky basic and not quite as good as Sky HD. So overall I'm an NTL Digital fan. I nearly bit the bullet earlier this year and ordered Sky HD but happened to be in a friends house who had it on a lovely Sharp LCD. While the HD channels were nice, the basic channels were significantly poorer than NTL Digital so I figured with only a few HD channels available and not all of the content on those actually HD then it was really a step down from NTL Digital.

The one thing that would make me move to Sky in future is the Plus facility - come on NTL (upc!) and get a PVR box out there.

The costs for both NTL Digital and Sky can be worked out (eventually) from their respective websites.

Re the telly - the sweet spot price wise at the moment is probably a 32 inch LCD. See the bargain alerts forum for some good deals on those. I have a toshiba 32" LCD and am very impressed with it's picture quality on NTL Digital.

News which may interest you, UPC have been testing a new PVR and it looks like they will begin using them from August. There are issues with the EPG which need to be sorted out first.

Sorry OP for going slightly off topic

I've had both NTL and Sky digital previously and now have Sky HD.

There is no question that Sky and NTL's basic packages are better than analogue tv but NTL's package should only be chosen as your digital service if you cant ge Sky.

NTL has so many cons. The remotes are terrible to use, the digital menus are terrible and for me the reception was terrible.
There is no sign of any HD offering on the horizon should you want to upgrade at any time.
Basicaly NTL's digital service has not moved forward in any way since it was launched.
oh also NTL has the WORST customer service ever.

Sky is all around better imo. The menus are so easy to navigate, the remote actually responds when you press a button. You have the option of Sky + which is very handy and Sky are actually developing new innovations that are actually handy like anytime and multi-start.

HD: It is not value for money at the moment thats for sure. But I have a brand new 42' Samsung with amazing resolution and the HD looks just WOW on it. Can't wait for the cup final this weekend.

Do other people who have used both Sky and NTL agree?

NTL remote control does not do what it is says on the button
NTL EPG is really poorly presented and difficult to navigate
NTL customer service is something that may or may not exist. Nobody knows.
NTL don't have any red button interactive stuff
NTL doesn't have regional variations so forget Scottish football or Welsh rugby
NTl don't let you keep the equipment after 12 months
NTL is pay or nothing. Nothing equivalent to freesat possible.
NTL dont have all the 4 ITVs and their +1s

I have NTL, Freeview, Irish DTT, Analogue, Freesat, Sky Digital and a heap of foreign sats too. (sad I know).
All I want from NTL is the bloke to come around and take the wires away.
