A standard holiday visa is valid for a couple of months I think, it is possible to get a 1yr holiday visa.
Are you looking at working there as well? Then grab a working holiday visa, all the information is on the interent. Apply online for it.

problem with the holiday visa is it only lasts 3 months at a time lasting up to a year. so, you have to leave and re-enter the country every 3 months (ie have flights to say your going to leave the country) before they even let you into the country. On the other hand the working visa lasts at least a year with an option to extend it but it can only be issued once in your lifetime (apparantly), so if you like it while your over there on your working visa you'd better stay there because if you come home you might not get a second chance.

im completey open to correction on any of the above tho ;)

Get a 3 month visa, and if you wish to stay another 3 months, pop over to nz or fiji for a bit then when you return you can get another visa, or you can get a working holiday visa for 1 year or 2 years (i think oyu can get a 2 year one now) don't waste a working holiday if visa if you are only going for a short time.
