In relation to the *spits* other, 16bit thread of this sort, ;)

    What's your favourite MD game?

Mine's gotta be Streets of Rage 1, maybe not the best in the series but the fondest of memories for that game.

    Brilliance, ESPECIALLY in Co-op.

Streets of rage 2,Dune 2 Battle for Arrakis, Mercs, Another World, The Strike games, The Revenge of Shinobi, Thunder Force IV, Shadowdancer, Road Rash 2, Vectorman 1&2, Comix Zone, Mega Bomberman, Super Fantasy Zone, Castle of Illusion..eh yeah, I'll leave it at that for the moment :D

Hmmm lots of memories but one that sticks out the most has to be Rings of power.

The Road Rash ones were great. I played Road Rash 3 a few days ago (Tour De Force I think?), a few tracks on it like Italy, UK, Australia and Germany to name a few. Another one, same company I think and similar tactics was Skitchin' *swings a cattle prod*. You were on the rollerblades instead of the bike. :)

I thought it was a complete Myth. Picked up a copy of the game last year as a matter of interest to see if it worked. I was shocked and appalled!

Oh wait, he said favourite Megadrive GAME.

    I have absolutely no idea.

Terminator vs. robocop was pure shìte.

    My top 5:

Gunstar heroes: pushed the MD like no other game and was amazing to boot.

Rocket Knight Adventures: Rock hard platformer from Konami. Fantastic stuff altogether.

Contra: Hard Corps: It's not called hard corps for nothing.com Best of the contra series for me.

Shining Force 2: Epic strategy RPG.

    Thunderforce IV: Sublime shmup.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,396 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Actually if anyone is interested in shmups they should check out ultra rare import Eliminate Down. Only discovered it recently and I think it's probably better than the godly Thunderforce III and IV

    ?????????????????

Robocop Versus The Terminator on the snes is pure ****e. The Megadrive version is completely different. It's a excellent game. Larged detailed sprites. Great sound and music. Tons of guns and action. One of the Megadrives best licensed titled.

I hope to god you're confusing the two. :p

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,396 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I'm not, it was even more disgraceful on the snes.

Awful supposedly digitised graphics featuring various shades of brown and grey, terrible soundtrack and dreadful level design and bosses. It was just so dull compared to Contra 3, Gunstar and Contra Hard Corps. The talked about gore was absolutely terrible. Awful sprites disintegrated into massive pools of comedy gore after taking 1 bullet and by the end of the first three levels there was no more gore. It's one of those games like Mortal Kombat that was hyped up at release and incredibly overrated but when you play it now and compare it to the true classics it's a load of ****.

    Golden axe 2
    revenge of shinobi
    super hang-on
    sonic

I agree, Robocop vs. Terminator was a stinking pile. For a comparable game that was far better I'd plump for Shadow Dancer.

My favourites (off the top of my head):
    - Gunstar Heroes
    - Street of Rage I and II
    - King's Bounty
    - Pete Sampras Tennis
    - Snow Bros
    - Sonic I and II
    - Pit-Fighter (ooh controversial)

    Streets of Rage 1
Streets Of Rage 2 (Best soundtrack ever ever used in a game)
    Revenge of Shinobi
    Golden Axe
    Alien Storm
    The Haunting: Starring Polterguy
    Bonanza Bros
    Fireshark
Two Crude Dudes (who remembers this?)

The gore runs up to level 5 until you beat ED209. Which is half the game. Awful graphics? Dull? I really don't think the game would have worked if it had the same colour palette as Gunstar. It has a dirty look too it which works.

Have you played through this game on a system properly? Or are you making your decision based on a 5 min play on an emulator?

It may not be comparable to some of the greats, but it is far from a pile of ****.

My favourites (off the top of my head):
    - Pit-Fighter (ooh controversial)

Speaking of piles of ****...

Played and beat it on the megadrive when it came out and remember wondering what the big deal over it was. Looked awful when it came out with some terrible digitised looking graphics, jerky scrolling and stinkeroo gameplay. I think you should give it a blast on an emulator and see how bad it has aged.

I have the cart and still take it out now and again when I feel like a bit of comedic style gore.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree ;)

For the record, the arcade version of Pit fighter was the shiznaz!:)

Agree with most of the posts already particularly Gunstar hero's. Some of my other favorites are as follows...

Crackdown (Don't ask me why it's one of those childhood memory things!)
Golden Axe (Not a bad conversion for time)
Zombies Ate My Neighbors (For being the best game you've never heard of)
    Earthworm Jim ( Fun game)
Ecco the dolphin (For having such an original game premise)
Desert Strike (For being different to anything else at the time)

    My all time faves are,
Road Rash series, bought RR2 when released and still have a copy, the 3rd one is nice, but not as nice and the original is fun, but the 2nd one definitely is the one to own, fantastic. I have its close cousin Skitchin', but it sucks, funny that!
Virtua Racing, a game I still play, from time to time.
Mickey and Donald World of Illusion, a gorgeous platformer
Thunderforce III & IV, things of beauty.
LHX Attack Chopper, loved nailing camels with mavericks, "Toasted!"
Sonic 3, only one I ever finished!
and the best of all, Flashback.
Flashback was incredible, a real eye opener as to what the Megadrive cold do, played it til I cleared it and loved every second.
BioHazard Battle, this game took my breath away, its the organic sheen to all the bad guys, especially those leechs, yuck!

I am a lucky man to be still able to play these games on the original hardware not on some bastard emu or VC on the Wii.

I remember it being really good and very impressive for an MD game. The game also supported a link cable that attached between the two cartridges so you could play deathmatch. Unfortunately the link cable was never released since the company that made the game went bust during the developement of the sequel before they brought out the cable.

The link cable was released as far as I know. You got an order card for it along with the game in the box. Had to send off.

Just got , cough cough, Thunder force V for the PS1, playing it on a ps emu, very nice, very nice indeed, it would be wonderful to see the Thunderforce series on new machines, maybe on XBLA?
I remember bringing my Megadrive to a mates place and popping on RR2, blew him away, then another guy produced his Snes with SuperMarioKart, faster framerate but flat courses, I preferred the undulating blacktop of RoadRash.
I may, however, be alone in this as most reckon SMK to be the work of the gods themselves, but I always loved RoadRash, excellent stuff, especially the little cinemas when you win or lose, very funny!

Bwahahahaha! PS1 version of Thunderforce V! The PS1 version looks awful. On the saturn is the only way to play that game. Never too fnd of TFV. Compared to Einhander, R-type Delta, G-Darius, Soukyugurentai, Radiant Silvergun and a whole lot more 32-bit shmup as well as TF 3 and 4 it's severely lacking.

Actually I was wondering what happened to tecnosoft after Thunderforce V. It seems they were almost finished Thunderforce VI for the dreamcast when the studio got shut down. Shame really they made great games. There's even a TF6 soundtrack floating around the web. Despite being almost exclusively a shmup development studio they created the first real time strategy game Herzog Zwei on the MD. There would be no starcraft without them. Anyone looking for a good Tecnosoft game should try Hyperduel on mame. Better yet get the saturn version which has a saturn mode identical to the arcade game but all the sprites and backgrounds are redrawn and in a high resolution.

Road Rash was a great game, altough the 3D0 version was better. Had a great two player split screen mode.

Aaaaah guys, who could forget Turrican, now that was a class game. I remember buying that game for the C64, 5 quid it cost, what a game. The megadrive was a very good game but I suppose the Snes version was better.

What about Contra, the hardest game of all time!!!1

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,396 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

But it was awesome. Loads of level, multiple paths, 4 endings and a secret one. Took me three months of on and off playing to see all the endings. I finished Contra 3 yesterday and I have to disagree on the general consensus that it's the best game in the series. Contra Hard Corp might not have the looks but it's far better game than Contra 3. The bosses in Contra 3 are actually quite simple compared to the monstrosities in Hard Corp.

It think Turrican was a great game for it's time and I used to love the C64 version. However it has been surpassed by games like Super Metroid and it's sequels Super Turrican 1 and 2 and Mega Turrican.

Speaking of Mega Turrican it was the most graphically impressive MD game. It had loads of gorgeous visual effects that can only be seen in this game such as Mode 7 effects, multiple colour transparencies, simultaneous sprite scaling and full 360 sprite rotation.

Another game I loved was Castlevania: the Next Generation. The only way to play the game is the japanese version since other versions are heavily censored. That had some gorgeous effects like the rotating tower of pisa, reflective water and the weird effect in the 5th level that fragmented the screen.

The thing is though , Altered Beast was a launch game for the Meg in ireland (and the UK) and was pretty amazing at the time (considering most people had only been playing games on 8bit systems like the C64/NES/master system etc).I remember a mate of mine getting a megadrive with this and Super Monaco GP shortly after it launched, and myself and my mates being gobsmacked at how good hey were (for the time anyway).

Also : cyborg justice , I picked up a copy of this a week or two ago , and I'd forgotten how good a beat em up it was!

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Regional Abroad Moderators Posts: 11,106 Mod ✭✭✭✭Fysh

Yeah, but Altered Beast was still rubbish. Boring gameplay, a crap learning curve and 5 (count 'em!) levels. That's FIVE. Compared to, what, 100 odd in Super Mario World? Not exactly a great choice of launch title so.

Hell, the GBA version of Altered Beast has loads more levels, better graphics and a few other improvements, and it still sucks. This is because Altered Beast was so goddamn bad that anything associated with it becomes tainted, requiring the ministrations of 3 priests and approximately 1 litre of holy water before redemption becomes possible...

The SNES soundchip blew away the mega drive soundchip. However many composers worked wonders with the Yamaha FM chip. Love practically all of Yuzo koshiros work other than Story of Thor and Rocket Knight Adventures had a great soundtrack as did the sonic games amoung others.
