This is probably daft, but anyway...

Why is it some emails seem to come through at varying times, (meaning seemingly late) I'm just after a receiving an email that was sent at 10:55am this morning. Even though I checked my emails a couple of times today it wasn't there before. I've the default sorting criteria set at Arrival Time.

I think the really big mass emails are put on a waiting list, and are sent around in the evening when network traffic is lower, so as not to weigh down the college network. Some more computery-knowledgeable person will come along any minute now and elaborate on that.

    Me fail English? Unpossible!

Yeah, that's what I thought. Some sort of time delay thingy. Danke.

Was it sent by a college email or from outside?

If I was to guess, I'd reckon that some of the SMTP servers might have a setting that buffers the emails before sending them. I know this was a default setting on QMail servers at one point and had to be manually turned off.

    Or

The time on one of the SMTP server computers is wrong and the email is arriving on time, but with the wrong time stamp.

The second actually seems to be the most common from when I used mymail. gmail seems to deal with it differently.
