FAO Civil Servants - Career Breaks/Secondments

    Hi All,

Wondering does anyone have info/experience on this particular situation.

I am in EO in the Civil Service (just over 3 yrs).

I am currently in the latter stages of my application for An Garda and if successful I will be taking up the job as Trainee Garda.

Now, for anyone not aware of the Garda training program - its approx 2 yrs duration with loads of exams and a thesis. So there is no guarantee that you will actually qualify as a full time Garda (i.e. you could fail exams).

I am trying to fin out is there a way to take a career break or secondment or something from civil service to join the broader public sector (i.e an Garda)??

As student garda you do get paid. So for anyone familiar with career breaks - you can't paid etc... but I was thinking since your employer is the state and will remain the state as a Garda is there an exception to or some way around the rule?

Obviously dont wanna fail the Garda training or something crazy like that and wind up with no job.

Have contact Dept. Finance bout this but they are a disgrace with reply to emails and answering voice mails.

    Help/info much appreciated
