    Hi,

Can anybody recommend me a good sturdy sewing machine? I want to get one in Argos or somewhere, but would like to know what brand/make would be recommended.

    Thanks.

Used to have a brother one and the tension thing on it went haywire and couldnt be regulated properly now have a singer and am happy enough with it but thats the only experience i've had. Heard that the toyota ones are good but alot of it is personel preference.
Know any one at school who could ask a H E teacher or someone that would of used serveral different makes

Depends on what you want to use it for. If you don't need embroidery stitches you could go for a reconditioned machine. I have had/used three or four Singers from a very old tredle (foot operated, not electric) to a fairly recent one (well come to think of it I've had it about 15 years :D , and haven't had any problems with any of them. The older machines tended to be made of more solid metal bodies and were like older cars, had less to go wrong with them. If you are on a budget and just want a workhorse I would suggest going to a Singer centre and looking at what they have in second hand. If you are using it for clothes and soft furnshings you would need to get a swing needle for doing zigzag, hemming and buttonholes.

Even if you are using it for art sewing, you really can manage without all the pre-set embroidery stitches, and if you want the high-end computerised embroidery then you are spending serious money and I would go somewhere where you can try them rather than Argos.

Pfaff, Brother, Singer are all good makes, you buy one based on what extras you need, but as with a lot of electrical equipment now, some obscure makes can give excellent service.

I too am looking at buying my first sewing machine after hearing some of the costs for getting simple roman blinds made. I've been tempted for a long while now and am finally ready to take the plunge.
As a genreal rule, what amount do I need to budget for a suitable sewing machine. I know that's a "how long is a piece of string" type question, but I'm just wondering is is a couple of hundred or significantly more.
    Any advice greatly appreciated.
