    hi guys

    looking to go to thailand, myself and the girlfriend

    we are going to bangkok for 2 days, koh samui for 5, then phuket for 5

    was just wondering if anyone else has done the same?
    what is the cost over there, is it expensive or cheap, how much money would you ahve to take?

    regarding electronic items, can you take any of these back to ireland?
    what would the customs say, and how much would they charge if you declare it?

    any help, gretaly appreciated

    fcuk Samui and go to Phi Phi instead - Paradise. Electronic items yep and can get a tax discount at airport, stash the pirate dvd's, cd's games , software in your luggage (you'll know what i mean when you get there - especiaqllly Bangkok)

    enjoy

    Why do you say fcuk Samui??...I lived in Koh Samui for 2 months and im going back in august for 3 months,its one of the best places in world to go to if you want to enjoy yourself,i hate all the negative things people say about it,phi phi might be paradise to you but its not to me i would call Koh Samui paradise,i would recommend koh samui to the OP as lots of couples go there for holidays and have a great time......

    Disagree with you totally empirix. I think Samui is a great place. Sure its become very commercialised over the last few years, but its still a lovely place. You do get a very different experience depending on which beach you base yourself around. Personally I prefer Lamai over Chaweng, as the beach is better and the people (I really mean the tourists) nicer, etc.

    Event, there is so much for you to do near Samui… Try the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan and a vist to Ang Thong.
    As for your 2 days in BKK, it’s a case of prioritise as there is so much to see and do. Don’t miss the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew; take a river boat on the Chao Phraya; visit the night markets of Patpong and the Chatuchak weekend market (largest market in Thailand/world?); and of course the night life of Soi Cowboy or Nana Plaza ;)

    see, trying to work out if its worth the money, would be around €1900 each

    and we'll probably only have 11/12 days holidays, due to the amount of time spent travelling

    if you can go to the national lapidary it is open to the public sometimes, it is the national jewellery manu. a lot cheaper than places you are brought on a tour. we were told by 2 separate people, one being a manager in our hotel who we met in the street (at the happy prince)

    well looks like we are going, 2 days in bangkok, 6 in phuket and 6 in koh samui

    what i was wondering about was dress code?
    is it ok for fellas to walk around in shorts and the ladies in bikinis?

    some websites were saying that shouldnt wear these, as its disrespectful to the thai people!
    is this true?

    The dress code in thailand is very strict, they have bouncers at the airport and if you are wearing runners they wont let you in and if you fly home and change into shoes and fly back they will recognise you and say that they are sorry that you have had too much.
    Dress code as follows:
    Mondays = White summer dress with red and blue flowers on it.
    Tuesdays = Toga
    Wednesdays = Santa Clause outfit
    Thursdays = Naked except for nasty skin rash
    Fridays = Spiderman outfit
    Saturdays = Casual
    Sundays = Satan Outfit

    Hope this helps

    I was in Bangkok and Samui in Feb with my Dad and my sister. Both are dirt cheap. I really like Samui, I too prefer Lamai over Chewang.

    While you are in bangkok go to the floating market, there is an Irish Bar near papong market "O'Reilly's" i think guiness was expensive £12 (punts) a pint, food good, i know its a cliche but best irish bar i ever went to, i generally avoid them like the plague.

    James Bond Island when in Phuket. it is getting into the rainy season there now.

    Dress Code only comes into it if you are visiting temples, upper arms have to be covered on both male and female and legs also.

    For dodgy software go to pantip plaza. If you do go on a guided trip dont bother with the tailors/jewellery places they bring you to.

    The clothes in shops are genuine. There was a good tailor in phuket got a great deal and they keep your recors for 5 years, across from shopping centre near the "cabaret"

    I'm off to Thailand in three weeks for a fortnight.

    I was thinking of doing a trek up North for a few days before heading south. Does anyone have any experience of this? I would like to see a bit of the country alongside going to the madness that is the full moon party.

    I was considering getting a internal flight from the North down to one of the islands.

    Has anyone here done anything similar and what were their experiences?

    Also, regarding spending money for a fortnight - how does a grand sound?

    A poster mentioned DVDs and games. I've heard about the markets and someone told me you can get suits out there on the cheap.
    Are they worth bringing a bit of extra cash over for or will they fall to shreds once they arrive on Irish shores?

    Many thanks for the tips, looking forward to drinking out of the famous buckets.

    I'm pretty sure Saturday is "Lady Boy attire" day.

    Also, €1900 for 12 days in Thailand, *drool*

    hi guys

    have been checking out the vaccinations, and looks like the following are needed

    Hepatitis A+B
    Typhoid
    Tetanus-diphtheria
    Polio

    Would this be the usual batch?
    how much should that roughly cost?

    For anyone going up north, a day trip, or a 3 day long stay in www.elephantnaturepark.org is a worthwhile excursion. They do wonderful work for abused and mistreated thai elephants and give them a safe place to live, medical care and acres of land to roam in.

    For any one else going to Thailand, please don't support the cruel elephant tourist trade and don't pay for an elephant ride, elephant shows or anything else that involves keeping these animals from their natural habitat.

    Obviously none of you have been to Phi Phi, how anyone can rate Samui better or more beautiful is clearly insane

    Agree with you on that. Phi Phi is the most idyllic place i've been to but don't the Middle Class Gap year students wreck your head?!

    i think you may need a bit more than a grand 1500 min, the clothes if you pick decent material will last, i have 2 suits 8 yrs old good wear out of them, getting a bit small:rolleyes:

    You must be mad. €1000 is above and beyond what you would need to really enjoy yourself there for 2 weeks.

    Hi I am trying to find out if it is worth going to thailand in september. I have been told that it is the monsoon season and not as many people will be around either. would it make much difference waiting until october?

    i usually bring 1500 to thailand for 2 weeks and have a good time,you can spend alot more if you want you could spend 3000 easily if you wanted, thailand can be very cheap if you want to eat from food stalls at the side of the road, stay in cheap accommodation , avoid all the touristy places etc. first time i went to thailand i lived on 1500 for a month had a ball, but i lived cheap basic accomdation etc. but if you really want to have a good time bring at least 1500, electronic items are no cheaper in thailand than home, and for dress code you girlfriend she can walk around in a bikini, but the thais don't like people walking around showing there pecks etc. in public its disrespectful. you would'nt walk into a bar or restaurant in ireland with your top off. also Samui is paradise as other people have said, and phuket is also stunningly beautiful, anyone who doesn't think this has only been to patong in phuket. but basically anywhere you go in thailand you will have the time of your life. its a great country.
