My new pc arrived from Dell yesterday and I only ordered it with a cd/rw as I already had a dvd/rw on my old pc. Anyway when it came to taking out the cd/rw and put in the dvd/rw I was not able to do it as there was no spare ide ribbon?! I would know a bit about computers but you guys in here are experts so please be nice to me!
The pc only came with room for one drive so I had to take the cd/rw drive out.

The DVD R/W will do the same as your new CD R/W as well as doing the DVD business so I would put the DVD in place of the CD.

The cdrw is probably Sata while the old drive is ide...

The OP was talking about an IDE ribbon! Why do you have to add your grain of salt whilst not answering his query?

If he wants the DVD burner and it is IDE how can one resolve his problem without adding extra expenditure? Will the SATA make so much difference against an IDE drive?

Yes, because he doesn't have one, the cd-rw that came with his new machine is Sata while his old one is IDE, that's why he can't put it straight in, so he clearly has to get an ide ribbon himself, assuming the dell board has ide ports.

Speaking of gains of salt, your first comment was basically a rehash of what he said! OP: I want to put my DVDRW in, but there's no ide ribbon?' Henrich: Yes, you should put in the DVDRW

    Read what he said.

OP, does the machine have an IDE port? Is your HDD attached to a SATS cable?

Henrich - what you have just said is precisely what I said just there? I don't see how I need to read his post, I know perfectly well what he's talking about.

Erm, Heinrich... Havok read what the OP said, as have I.

Now tell me, why would the OP not be able to put the DVD in after taking out the CD, if it was not for an interface incompatibility?

You take a drive out, you put another in, if the interface is the same then of course there's no need for any extra ribbon and it would go right in!
Oh, there's no need for a spare ribbon either, since you are just replacing a drive with another.

So, concurring with the SATA/IDE first suggested by Havok.

Oh dear! The OP said his drive was on a ribbon! These ribbons have connections for two IDE devices. If he cannot connect it would mean that the HDD is attached and the burner is on slave.

The OP can use the DVD burner for bot DVD and CD burning.

Let's get more details from the OP before the mud starts flying and we get banned or summat.

The new machine probably came with a sata cd-rw and his old dvd-rw is probably an ide. Your confusing the old machine with the new one.

Thanks for all the feedback and I think my use of the English language is sh** which has led to much confusion. My apologies for that.

New machine came with a sata cd-rw and my old dvd-rw is an ide.

So now we have that part sorted will one of these do the job

Do Dell still sell CD-R/RW drives as most DVD-R/RW drives these days are also CD-R/RW drives to begin with ?

As for the adapter that should work or get an IDE controller but for a few more bucks you can get a SATA DVDRW anyway.

Did you check the motherboard to make sure that there is not an IDE connector on it. Most motherboards still include 1 IDE connector (along with the 4 SATA) connectors. If it does you could just hook up the old drd/rw with the old IDE cable and save yourself the money.

It has a spare IDE connector but it is too small. It is only there if I ever wanted to add a a floopy drive

Yeah most new dells are SATA-only. Even most non-Dell motherboards now only have one IDE port, and they only have that because the OEM added it and a controller for it in - the Intel chipsets, at least, no longer have built in IDE controllers.

Just to reiterate are you certain you have only CD-R/RW drive download VSO Inspector and post the model name of the drive ?

DVD writers which also write CD's completely replaced CD writers and not a single system dell sell in it's stock config uses a CD writer they are almost all DVD\CD combo writers.

I have not heard of any SATA CD writers either only SATA DVD writers which also write CD's.

You could be going to a lot of trouble for nothing.

    Taken from Dell quote

    CDRW 48X (read/write) /DVD-Reader (Combo)

Oh well I guess so I'm honestly surprised Dell go to the trouble of making a SATA version.
