Hi, I'm nearly finished my degree in Information System - Computer Application (similar to Software Engineering/Computer Science) at DCU and was wondering if I would be ebigible for a HDip in anything? e.g. Computer Studies and secondary level?
I've tried searching around the boards and emailing a few people but I can't seem to get a hold of any information.

Does anyone know off hand what I could possible be eligible for? &/or where I could obtain information about applying for a HDip?

Any & all help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

According to the CAO Post Grad applications centre, http://www.pac.ie/hdip/downloads/TRC07.pdf
you'd be qualified to teach computers in school.

I think it'd be best to contact the college you'd like to apply to directly. They'd have the most accurate information.

I qualified with that degree and currently teach computers and maths.
Officially I can only teach computers, which would be extremely limiting as a teacher - it isn't taken seriously in most schools.
I want to follow up with the school in DCU as to why it isn't good enough for maths (or even junior science) - especially as the biotechnology degree qualifies you as a maths teacher and (in my day at least) we shared a lot of the maths classes with the biotechnologists. Since you're still there, you might have more luck asking them about this - whether the teaching council reviewed the degree recently for example.
It isn't really a question of whether you qualify for the HDip - if you have a degree on their list (you do), a reasonable grade (probably a 2.1 or more) and a pulse you are accepted. It is more a question of whether you'll get a job and whether you might be better off just doing a JEB or similar.
    Hope this helps.
PS Would you report back if you hear anything more from the dept in DCU.

Is there an ICT computer subject on the cards as a LC subject with a LC exam?

Not so far but in time there might be. Look into it cos in truth qualifying is the easy part, getting a job is harder. Best of luck

There is already in the LCA.
There is a compulsory exam and then for those that take the IT specialism there is an extra exam, plus the usual key assignments etc.

Just stumbled across this thread as I was thinking of moving into teaching.

From the website listing there, does this mean that with just a BSc I'd be
able to take a job as a Computer Studies teacher in a secondary school?

Is a H.Dip or Grad. Dip just needed to qualify for extra subjects and be
    eligible for permanency?

The BSc I took is on the approved listed but I'd also be interested in teaching
Maths as we had a maths subject.

Financially it is not viable to pack in work and take a full time H.Dip and,
also due to current work/location, I wouldnt be in a position to do the part-time
Grad.Dip in DCU at the moment.

I did a PGCE in ICT over in the UK. I plan to teach IT here in Ireland but ironically the subject I will be registerd to teach is history (easier this way as my BA is automatically recognised whereas my IT related masters is not).

From talking to the NCCA the impression I was given is they have no immediate plans to make ICT a mainstream LC subject. There are ICT jobs coming on stream by virture of bigger schools who are starting to take ICT seriously.

Having thaught ICT in the UK it is very dissapointing to see the lack of opportunity afforded to Irish students in relation to the development of ICT capability.
