Macbook RAM and HDD

    Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade my MacBook's RAM to 2GB and was just wondering where's a good place to get it? The Apple online store seems a bit pricey. A search on Google suggested Newegg.com but they only ship to the States.

As regards the hard drive, I presume any 2.5" HDD will do the trick?

    Thanks!

I'd recommend Crucial also. I'm not sure what their prices are like now but they had some big reductions on mac RAM a while ago.

2.5" hard drives come in 9cm and 9.5cm.
    Check which one Apples take.
    My money's on 9.5cm.

www.memoryc.com do the correct ram, and even do an apple pack quite cheap - its Transend I believe, at €40 per gig and overnight shipping normally.

    http://www.memory-configurator.com/memory/APPLE/TS1GAP667S.html

Hard drive is a 9.5mm SATA, I got one from komplett go for the 5400rpm rather than the faster 7200rpm, apparently the transfer speed is higher even though the rpm is lower - weird I know ?

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=323903

Now if only I could get a 9mm slotload dvd burner on the cheap ... anyone ?

Thanks guys, very helpful! I can't believe how that memory is less than 1/3 the price of the Apple store :D

over here in boston lookin to get a 200gb hard drive for my mac
anyone recommend a good site or link for the cheapest and best

    www.shop4memory.com are good too.

Regarding hard disks: replacing one in a MacBook is easy but MacBook Pros have to be practically dismantled to upgrade. Also aren't 200GB drives only 4200RPM. Wouldn't that effect performance if you use your Mac for video ?

5400rpm is the standard speed of the macbook standard hdd.. i've seen 160gb 5400rpm ones. and also i've seen a 120gb 7200rpm one.

so at the moment, 160gb in 5400rpm will be grand

but the il need an enclosure for the hd i removed, will i judt get any sata sata or does or is there such a thing as a 9.5mm one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,073 ✭✭✭eurotrotter

if i get an enclosure to house the original macbook hd wat spec must a i look out for
i know i thas to be sata 2.5" but is there different enclosures for hd's with different dimensions i.e 9mm and 9.5mm
    thanks

Not really. Look for a SATA for 2.5" HDD, they're usually for 9.5mm but can't think of any way the .5mm will affect it in an enclosure.
Worst comes to worst you can just use a bit of card or something :p

note: highly unscientific, I accept no responsibilities!

In fairness, it'd be easier on consumers if they'd stick to IDE instead of using ATA (as well as differentiating further into ATA-133, ATA-166 etc); so I can see his confusion.

I replaced my hard drive recently and this site http://www.ifixit.com/ told me everything i needed to know from exactly which type of disk to put in to step by step how to put it in. It takes time and patients but is doable. best of luck.

    eurotrotter, that link isn't working.

You've got a recent Macbook right? Then afaik you'll need two 1GB chips of DDR2 PC2-5300.

It's highly recommended that you use the crucial or kingston memory configurator or the memory chooser on most sites that sell RAM for instance, these are what Crucial recommend for a White C2Duo MacBook 2GHz.

Not all RAM is created equally and the Mac is very fussy about it's RAM. Just because the specs match up doesn't mean it will automatically work. This has been my experience with Macs anyway.

are u saying it will be offering me optimal performance from 2gb 's of ram or that will only offer mediocre 2gb performance?

RAM is RAM; it'll work at one speed (the Mac standard) only -- 667Mhz DDR[2].
Unless you got PC2-4200, which is 553mHz or somesuch.
But 2 1Gb sticks of PC2-5300 is what you want.

If youre replacing your hard drive, just make sure you have the correct skrews, theyre called Torks or somehing like that.

I didnt have them and it was a nightmare, I nearly f***ed it up.

Very happy with my 160 gig 5400 Seagate jobby, from Komplett.
