sounds very exciting. in dubai they really have the money to go for these ventures. although how popular is a self-sufficient building going to be for all the sheikhs who've made their fortunes from oil? suppose alot of the materials - plastics, etc - will need alot of oil!

Not forgetting drugs and zillions of specialist chemicals. Using oil for energy in 2007 is a gross waste of the planet's resources, and a total neglect of future generations. Aside from CO2 issues and the millions of people who will be displaced or die, mainly in poorer countries, as a result of climate change.

An estimated 20,000 people died in France in the summer of 2003, who wouldn't have otherwise died, simply due to a rise in temperature. Who is keeping count of weather extreme related deaths in the third world? Nobody. Swept under the carpet.

Pat Kenny recently interviewed someone involved with developing/marketing the island of Ireland in Dubai (www.theworld.ae), and he prodded him on the environmental issues of this "green island". The response was that we will have our own generators - no doubt running on hydrocarbons. Not a mention of solar or anything else. Typical oirish. Brain dead. I'm allright jack thinking.
