Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II lens USM or Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM. Both lens are around the same price. My thoughts on the telephoto zooms are that the longer the zoom and bigger the lens the greater the chance of camera shake problems but I'm just wondering if anyone out there has had a chance to compare the image quality of these two. I know there are better Canon lenses available but I don't neccessarily want to take out a mortgage to pursue the hobby!

You're starting out. I'd consider the Sigma 70-300mm same aparture size as the two above and you'll pick one up in Dublin between €190-200.

Save your wads for the Wide Angle and Macro lens :)

Hi gandalf, I'm only starting out on digital slr. I've been at 35mm slr since (actually it would be embarrassing to say!) but a lot of years with a break for the last few. My last 35mm was a Canon t90 preceded by a Canon A1. The joke is that when I started off it was cheaper to buy any kind of a prime lens than zooms which at the time everyone accepted were inferior in image quality to the prime. The reson for the query is that on all of the cameras I never had an original manufacturers lens other than the prime 50mm resorting to the likes of Tamron, Vivitar and Tokina for either fixed focal or zoom. The sigma seems to be definitely worth checking out though particularly the APO version. Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah it was the APO I was talking about :)

After the 70-300mm you should look at the Sigma 10-20mm now thats my pride and joy :D

btw only starting out here as well, have had my 350D since Jan and loving it. Did a course in the DCC so have an idea of what I am doing now, before that used point and clicks and had an old Canon film SLR where I used the programmed settings (!!!!).
