    Hey,

Just got a new mac and have to use itunes to listen to my music. At the moment i have to copy all my music onto the harddrive to listen to it.

As i don't want my HD full of MP3s,is there a way of just opening my MP3s thru itunes from an external HD?

Is there anything compatible with mac like winamp I can download?

    Thanks

Not sure why you would have to copy all your songs across? What makes you say that? You can set your "Home" music folder to any folder you want in the iTunes Preferences - think it's on the "advanced" tab. If you are always going to use the external drive, just change it there to point iTunes at that drive.

Note also that there's an option though to "consolidate" library... or something like that, ie always copy across the file automatically when you add it to your library. And secondly, there's an option to organise your library automatically. You may or may not want these options switched on if you wish to manually keep control of the items in the library.

Otherwise, you should be able to just "Add Folder" to the library from the file menu if you've songs in a folder on the external drive you want to make available in your song library (just make sure you don't have that option to copy the files across if your home music folder is staying as it is or you'll end up with two copies of the file).

Ok.Think I get that.Should have said I'm new to itunes aswell.

Although every time I'v tried to play music thru itunes from my hard drive its just automatically copied them to my comp.

I'll mess about with dome preferences and give it a whirl then.

    Cheers for the advice

No problem - I just had a look at my own iTunes now and I'd guess the options in that advanced tab, under "general" is what's causing you the problem alright - iTunes will have by default it's "iTunes Music Folder" on your hard drive and if you have the "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder ... " ticked also, everything is going to get copied in there. So, basically, you can either choose to change the iTunes folder location or untick that option, the latter will probably cause you less bother. You should be sorted then. Best of luck!
