Not sure I exactly follow but I think you are trying to add a laptop running Vista to en existing network comprised of XP Pro's machines is that correct ?

If it is then check the networking centre in Vista and that it is set to private mode not public & that it is in the same workgroup as the XP machines.

With both those set if the network is running a DHCP server it should be plain sailing, the network centre also allows you to enable/disable file sharing etc so if you want that on that's where to set it.

    correct

got to find the network centre in vista now

not having administrator enabled in vista is a puzzling quirk that took a couple of hours to sort

    hard work this vista:)
