Hi, I'm going to Paris for the first time with my girlfriend on Thursday 17th May, which I just found out is a national feast day - Ascension Day. Will everything be closed in Paris that day and would anyone recommend doing anything in particular on such a day?

Your not just going for one day are you?

No as far as i know, you will find that there will be special services in the Sacre Coeur, notre dame and the many other religous monuments, from what i've read treat the day like a Sunday. Not everything will be open but most tourist sites and cafes/restaurants should be open. On the shopping side, probably don't expect the smaller stores to open at all, the larger shopping areas might open a bit later in the day?

Also, i'd imagine it will be pretty busy that day, queues to places of interest etc, due to a lot of french travelling into paris that day for the public holiday!
