Using Router with Magnet IPTV STB

Hi all,
I sue Magnet for both my TV and Internet and my home is wired by Magnet for ethernet cable.

I'm wondering if anybody has been able to put a router between the STB and the wall connection. Since there is only 1 wall socket and I need 2, 1 for TV & 1 for PC I'm trying to use a router to allow this.

If TV is connected directly to wall, STB (set top box) works and I get TV. If I put router between STB and wall socket, STB doesn't boot up properly - seems to hang.
PC works fine either connected directly to wall or via router.
Therefore I think problem may be to do with ports being blocked by router?

Just wondering if anybody has been able to do this? Any help greatly appreciated

Hi There,

You're out of luck using a router. A simple switch device however will be fine. When the STB boots, it needs to get additional information from the Magnet DHCP server as regards its boot information and your router wont have any knowledge of this.

Any of the following devices should pretty much do the trick.

Can I configure my router to act as switch instead of router and pass everything to the STB, could this work?

What exactly is the problem? Is the router blocking ports or doesn't support some protocol?

It's not a port thing or anything like that. When you plug the STB into the router, it (the routers DHCP server) assigns an address to it, but the box needs more information like where to go for its boot software etc. When it gets its address from Magnet's DHCP server, it gets the extra info so then can proceed to boot.

I guess you can configure your router, never done it myself, but I'm pretty sure it's gonna involve flashing it with new firmware.

Hi all,
just for future reference, I got this to work and I didn't need to buy a switch.

I was able to convert my router, Netgear WGR614v6, into a switch by following these instructions.
