I have an interview next week for a job in the library service. Can someone recommend a English-Irish translation website so I can look up some library-related terms as my Irish is all but non-existant.

    Thanks!

    :)

Don't you need working knowledge of Irish to work in the library service? Why did you apply if you can't get by in the Irish language?

Pick up some of the leaving cert Irish stuff I guess. You'll probably just look silly in the interview if your Irish is non existent.

I agree with the above, having a few technical words isn't worth much if you don't already have a working knowledge of the language.

www.focal.ie is worth a look for translations though.

I started working in the library service last November and during the interviews in June it was made very clear that if you fail the Irish oral you won't get the job regardless of the points in the other areas of the interview.

Did you do Irish for your Leaving cert? My interview oral wasn't too far removed form the Leaving tbh. My Irish isn't great but I managed to rope some boardsies in to help me out and I got some study and practice done before the exam. I was asked about where I live, if I'd been on holidays, what the place was like. He then asked me about the new library building and I had revised some stuf fon the services that were offered and steered the conversation that way. It was all pretty basic stuff really.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I was exempt from Irish at school. I included my exemption certificate and indicated on the form that I did not want my Irish tested at the interview so they know that my Irish is all but non-existant. I applied for the job because in every other respect I am suitable for the job. I never expected to get an interview so I'm a bit baffled tbh.

So you've told them you have no Irish, then whats the problem. Either they're wasting your time or they've accepted it. Get on the phone and tell them of the cock up.
