Headset/Mic problem

    Hallo

My mam bought a webcam a while ago and we got a free Logitech headset/mic combo dealy. I can't for the life of me get it to work though. There's a pink wire and a black wire which I'm assuming plug into the back of my PC but I've tried that without luck. I can get the headset to work (sort of) if I plug the black wire into my speakers but the mic still doesn't work. I dont think there was any software that came with it. I thought it'd be really straightforward to get it to work but I can't :(

I've onboard sound (Realtec AC'97) and windows XP. Hope you guys can help. Thanks!

uhm.. you just plug these :

    plantronics_audio_90_stereo_pc_headset.gif

into the respective slots on your computer

    imageview.php?image=2835

    pink to pink,

etc. try the black into green either, headset is normally green.

Yea I did that alright but the mic doesnt work. Headset works fine but not the mic. Probably just broken?

Did you check the sound properties to make sure that its not muted or the volume turned down very low?

At the back of your pc where the audio ports are. There should be a few different coloured ones:

The Headphones/mic combo you have will have a a jack for mic and headphones. Using that picture match up the pink jack to the pink port, and the one left over plug into the green port. If you have no colours on your ports use the picture ( it has symbols ) to guage which goes where.

I do have colour coded ones and I've put them into the proper sockets and even tried all combinations of possible sockets but they still dont appear to work

    How are you testing it?
AFAIK if you speak into the mic, you won't hear it thru the PC Speakers.

If you're using Skype or similar there are audio properties settings in one of the menus (can't remember which one).

Try using windows Sound Recorder to see if the mic is working. Make sure you have the sound card selected as the input device.

Could you try the headset on another PC, or could you get another Mic to try on your mum's pc to eliminate the PC or Headset as the cause of the problem?

****, it was muted in volume. I've unmuted it now but it still wont work!

Are you sure that wasnt the playback properties, it should be muted in the playback properties. You need to check the recording properties and make sure its not muted there.

There is two sets of properties so make sure you were looking at the right ones.

control panel > sounds and audio devices > voice > test hardware

Test the mic and set levels....

Make sure you havemic volume up and Mic Boost on.

To do this, open Volume Control, go to Options->Properties, Select Recording, make sure Microphone is selected then click OK, then Advanced under Micrphone. You'll get this:

Make sure Mic Boost is ticked.

Your realtek audio chip (if it's not too old) is capable of switching the ports around to do different things. Usually the auto-sensing works fine, but not necessarily, and for all we know, someone could have gone in and overridden the auto-sensing thing to have your mic port output your center and subwoofer surround channels :)

If you have the realtek drivers installed, there should be a system tray icon for it. If you go in to the properties, you should find a screen something like this:

    http://www.xbitlabs.com/images/mainboards/asus-p4p800e/ac97-driver-s.png

Make sure Auto Sensing is turned on if you have the option. If it already is, try turning it off and manually changing the pink socket to Mic In.

    >>edit: also in there, you can choose your correct speaker configuration, so if you're using the headphones, select headphones, and you will get a proper headphone output on the appropriate socket. I'm not sure what you mean by getting it to "work (sort of)".

If that's all okay, like someone else said, you need to make sure your mic recording volume is selected. Your playback volume SHOULD be muted, unless you really dig the sound of your own voice.

In the crappy windows volume control panel, click options then properties. Choose the recording radiobutton, make sure microphone is checked, and click OK. This will let you examine and control the microphone volume/muting.

Also, as someone else said, test in sndrec32 to make sure it's really not working. We don't know how you've tested it and are just taking your word for it when you say it doesn't work! :)

Hi again. Thanks for thre replies.

Yes I've been testing it in Sound Recorder all along. I'll give the things you all said a shot later on today. Thanks again.
