Guy Gowan Session - Back on

    I just had a chat with Guy Gowan on the phone ... Aftere having the opportunity to discuss with him and explain directly our situation. (In particular the fact that some of our membership are unwaged and therefore would struggle to attend at his normal rates) ... There was a misunderstanding on our previous pricing which was more reflecting the fact that they did not understand that this was a not for profit session for our members only.

    I think Guy has been very generous to offer us a 1 day Boards only photoshop session at extremely reasonable prices. This session will take place (assuming we can get numbers) on Saturday 23rd June 2007.

    I agreed with him the following -
    • Price per person Eur 75 per person excluding venue costs which will be extra
    • Guy will cover his own personal expenses (I need to verify this ... and to be fair for the price he is quoting we should at least get him and his staff lunch on the day, not to mention accommodation)
    • We (I) have arrange a venue ... (I'll try to get one for free but for now I'll collect a bit more from everyone and refund and leftovers on the day).
    • Minimum numbers 20 (Guy did not ask for this but I think it is only reasonable to set a minimum attendence to make it worth his while)
    • Maximum numbers 30-35.
    • The session will be the same as the NCAD session though there is a little flex possible on the day (http://www.thestudio2u.com/etntworld/)
    On this basis I will proceed only once I have collected sufficient money up front from numbers 20.

    The rate will be Eur 90 for now (if the venue cost more then I may need to ask for a few bob more, but that should be plenty and we may get it free), I have agreed that the only people being paid for this will be Guy and the venue. I will not seek to make any profit, if I get any change from the venue costs then I will refund on the day of the event or give it to Guy.

    Please PM me to arrange payment and vote in the poll above to confirm to everyone else we have numbers.

    This is an extremely generous offer from Guy who is, after all, running a business. It is intended to make his session accessible to lower/unwaged members. So not one to be missed ... as he has a way of making the complexities of photoshop very easy to understand.

    Sebzy is exploring a free venue at DCU. I am looking into sponsorship from one of the shops / camera makers etc ... any other ideas for a free Dublin based venue are welcome ...

    I think it is important to point out that Guy is doing this to make his expertise more accesible to those less able to afford his normal sessions ... not just to give us a cheapo session ...

    I'm my other life, one of the things I sell is technical training and our day rates are a lot higher per person...

    On this basis I hope some of our younger or unwaged members will join in ... this is a cheap are you are going to get for a session such as this ... so don't miss this once off opportunity. I am hopeful we will get a free venue and thus I can reduce the price to Eur75-80 per head ... but I make no guarantees ...

    Ok the room as it stands has
    27 Desks
    34 Chairs

    If we went for 3 rows deep by 13 seats/desks we could fit 39 without being squished.

    Will sort out extra seating and tables the day before.

    Hi guys,
    Great stuff to get something like this organised. I was saying to Rymus that perhaps the minumum of 20 people in attendance is a little crazy and saying that 35 chairs could be fitted into the room

    I don't think it is of any peoples concern that it would be better for the guy to ahve a minimum number of 20. What should matter is that you the photographers wanting to learn from this guy should be of utmost importance not the other way round, the guy is still gonna get his money at the end of the day.

    Think about this.. do you really think you could get any one to one with this guy in a room of 20+ people.

    Would it not be better for your own learning and experience to have a smaller group. I know it would mean it would be more expensive for the people taking part but you all would pick up and learn a lot more etc.

    In my own experience of any courses i have done along the way, smaller groups make for better learning and understanding.

    Feel free to argue this point with me. I just thought i'd give my two cent worth.:)

    EDIT ... removing stuff and making it civilised ... :o

    I made it clear above that Guy did not impose any restrictions on minimum or maximum numbers. This was my desicion to make it accessible to as many as possible, particularly those of us on lower incomes ...

    What Guy did do was agree to considerably lower his normal rate, a rate which he can easily get business elsewhere... he did this because I asked him to consider that some of our members can't afford his normal price being unwaged or students ... I wanted to make the session accessble to as many of us as possible.

    I would have been happy to pay €100 for the NCAD session the day before ... which will have 50 atendees ... and also priced at a discounted rate...

    ... he also agreed to give up his weekend with his family in the UK in the midst of a very busy schedule ...

    and he is not charging us his normal expenses rate at Eur200-300 per day ...

    If you want a one to one session I'm sure his business manager will quote you a rate for that too ... it will cost a hell of a lot more than €75 ...

    Thank you leinsterman for all your work without you this would all have gone up in smoke. I would like a smaller group but I would also like a Mk III for free too. Well it's not going to happen

    Sit down stop complaining and take a good look at what your getting. It's a great deal and not an easy one to get.

    Ta again

    EDIT sorry will make it all nice

    Ok ... debates aside ... we are still not at critical mass here ... so we need a few more bodies ... hopefully over the next few days we will get these ...

    As soon as we get numbers I'll PM you all individually to arrange to collect money ... bear in mind I can't give a go ahead to Guy's business manager until I have the money in hand ... and she will be pressing me for confirmation ... so please be prompt in paying up once contacted ... if I cannot get sufficient cash then I'll arrange refunds ...

    Sorry Leinsterman if you think i have been insulting you in the energy you are putting in to make this happen.

    I have no interest in taking this course, maybe i should have kept my mouth shut so.

    My post was only out of concern for those of you taking part and that you all would get the best learning and experience from this.

    Just a misunderstanding ... lets not fall out over it ... you got me at the end of particularly stressful day at the office ... so I shot first and forgot to ask questions later ...

    I'd REALLY love to attend this,fair play to you leinsterman for sorting it out. But i can't get off work that day it seems , so i'll be missing oput.But i would urge anyone who is serious about their photography to go along , his insights are very beneficial.

    Ok .. we are falling a little bit short of the required numbers ... but it should not be a problem to get the gaps filled ... I propose the leave the thread for a few more days and see what happens ... then I'll make contact with Guy's business manager to confirm we may be taking the slot ...

    Once I start asking you all for money you will need to react quickly ... if one person delays, then everyone is affected.

    As regards a venue ... I have not heard anything regarding sponsorship but Sebzy has got us something at DCU ... I may need to keep the price up to make up for the shortfall in numbers ... plus I am not 100% certain that Guy's expenses (an additional €200-€300) need to be covered.

    OK ... I need to get some cash from everyone.

    Note: Terms and Conditions apply :o, see below -
    • The fee for the event will be €85. If, on the day, our numbers swell to more than 20 then a small refund may (at the discretion of the organisers) be given;
    • This is a not for profit event. This means that, with the exception of ETNT limited, anyone associated with organising it (including myself) shall not attempt to make any money from it;
    • If any one of the above persons does not pay up in full by Friday 25th May then the event may be cancelled at the discretion of the organisers and/or ETNT limited;
    • The organisers of the event (i.e. Sebzy and myself) are only facilitating this event for the boards.ie gang by collecting money and arranging a venue. We are not responsible if you are not happy with the content and/or any other matters;
    • Once paid up there are no refunds for cancellations by individuals unless the event does not go ahead;
    • The organisers and ETNT Limited accept no liability for losses as a result of the event not going ahead including, but not limited to, if there is a problem with the Venue and/or if ETNT Limited cancel;
    • If there is a problem with the venue then it may become necessery to levy an additional charge for a venue. By agreeing to pay for the event in advance you are accepting that this may become necessery. Hi ...

    Time and venue hmmnnnn ... someone has not be following too closely.

    OK first some good news -

    Canon Ireland has offered sponsorship (hopefully the venue and some demos of their kit) ... I need to check with Canon on the scope ... and ETNT if this is OK ... I'll then advise back.... this gives us the chance to get involved in some gear porn ... I asked them to bring a 1ds MKIII for demos ...and some of their latest scanners and printers ...

    The venue for the moment is DCU on Collins Avenue ... but this may change depending on what Canon are offering ...

    The Time is Saturday 23rd June all day long from 9am to 5pm.

    For the avoidance of doubt ... I will not proceed to book this event until I have €1,100 collected from you all ... after that I will not collect any more money until the day itself ...

    If it becomes necessery to levy an aiddtional fee due to venue problems, I don't anticipate it being more than a few extra euro ... almost certainly less than €25.... in reality I expect we will fill the session closer to the date and we will all end up paying €75+pay pal costs ... I need to collect the minimum fee to confirm it first however ...

    LOL Oly wont even send out slaes reps never mind WORKING demo models. Tight assed mofo's. You would have a better chance asking canon to demo the E510 rather than Oly. :)

    OK ... a few people have not paid yet ... we are not far from the required minimum, we need 5 more to pay the deposit and we're in business, but I need the cash in my paypal ASAP or I will not be confirming with ETNT on Friday ... so, if your out there and you want to go to this event then please contact me to pay up ASAP ...

    I know we will have lots more people on the day of the event ... but we need to place a deposit and those who have paid so far (a big thanks to you all:)) ... cannot be expected to shoulder the cost burden for the rest of you ... so please show a bit of group spirit ...

    Also ... there are a few people I cannot contact except by PM which I'm not certain has been seen by the individuals, namely -

    borderfox
    covey
    candidsoul
    Dara Robinson
    morlar

    Can any of the above people please contact me via PM ASAP and let me know where we stand (are you still a yes or are you a now a no)?

    If anyone is in contact with any of the above can you please ask them to contact me ...

    I need the following information so I can issue an invoice via paypal -
    Real Name
    Mobile Number (in case I need to contact you)
    email (preferrably the one you use for paypal)

    Thanks for the help ...

    Also, anyone attending the meets this weekend is welcome to pay me in person ... in this way we are not liable for the pay pal fees (€4) ... I may not make it Saturday in which case you can give the money to Sebzy or Elven ... if you intend to pay in this manner PM me and let me know.
