buying bike with factory restriction removed

    just wondering what are the dangers here. I've dropped the idea of buying the v-rod and am looking at more reasonable priced bikes. I spotted one in the local shop. Its a 06' Yamaha FZ6. Nice looking bike and from what I hear it's a decent machine as well.
    The thing is, when asking about insurance, I was told this particular bike was in insurance category 5 because it was down as factory restricted. It should be 11 because the limiter has been removed.
    What do ye reckon about that situation. Will an insurance company not cough up if they find out the bike wasn't limited? Would they even find out?

    I got one of them. I like it. Looks well and no faults as yet. She's only 1 year old (this week) so I'd certainly expect a clean run so far.

    Translation : Will an insurance company hold onto it's hard earned money at all costs? And so in the case of an accident where they might have to pay out lots of damages will they get up off their ass and pay a mechanic to check out the bike?

    Damn right they will. Your insurance company is not your friend. They are more like the mafia. You keep paying them protection money and maybe one day you'll ask them for help and if it's in their interests they'll help you out.

    You will only have a problem if you actually insure it as a group 5 bike.
    If you insure it as a group 11 bike then there is nothing they can do I think.

    The difficulty with unrestricted Factory Restricted bikes is whether they can actually ever be re classed as Factory Restricted. FR bikes are worth a bit more than derestricted ones.

    If the restriction is ECU based and it has been swapped for a full power one, then the serial numbers won't match the Manufacturers DB. By right you (or the owner) would really have to send in the Vehicle Registration Cert in with the new Power figures. I don't know the penalty for a discrepancy on the sheet.

    Do you have a licence that covers you for unrestricted bikes? Personally, I have a FR SV and there is not much difference between the FR and FP ones.

    If you are new to bikes (ie within the restriction period) and this is your "first big bike" then without wanting to sound condescending, I would recommend driving an actual FR bike.

    My FR SV is for sale if that is any good too.

    The diff between my Fazer 600 FR and FP is astonishing. From 33hp to 90 odd hp. Powerband from 8-12 revs really makes the bike move.

    I thought the SV would be much more powerful derestricted?

    Since there seems to be experience with the FR and FP versions of this bike in this thread. Can anyone tell me what method Yamaha use to restrict it?

    This will let me know what the potential cost is to remove the restriction in the future. Although will most likely sell the bike on then and get something newer.

    The full power SV is 70 bhp, and the full power fazer6 is 78hp according to yamaha tech specs.

    anyway, I agree, the difference between FR and FP bikes is the run on acceleration - i.e. 100-140 etc. which is where the revs you are talking about take effect.

    0-100 on the FR bikes is very quick, especially on the SV because the torque is not restricted as much as the power.

    isnt it only Aon that recognise factory restricted bikes? though of course you driving a non factory restricted bike when your license doesnt allow it (and in the result of an accident and been found) means that your license is invalid - hence breaking another clause of your insurance, and again they'll weasel out. Well... they'll pay, but they'll just sue you for the damages.

    Hey all, thanks for the info. I have had plenty bikes. Honda Rebel 125, Suzuki Marauder 250, Yamaha Virago 535, Suzuki Intruder 800. I also have had my full license for about 4 years.
    It's just that I haven't had a bike in almost 2 years now, and looking to get back into it. To be honest I'm a bit all over the place and can't decide what I want to get. My Latest interest is the BMW R1200C Montauk. Pretty costly though.
