I've been hearing alot about this lately and with exams coming up soon, and since i prefer to stare out a window then at a book, i was wondering...

Can this be gotten over the counter? If not are there any alternatives with similar effects? Has anybody got any experience (good or bad) with using drugs like these?

Ritalin only works if you actually have a need for it, ie a condition like ADD. If you do not have a condition, then Ritalin has the reverse effect and will make you even worse at concentrating.

If you think you have a condition, go to your GP

not true.
if anyone took ritalin they would find an improvement in their concentration, attention span etc. however, its unlicensed for use in those without an underlying disorder.

If anyone took amphetamines, would they be able to concentrate better?

The side effects of amphetamines would hinder the increased concentration, although in theory they would help.

Ritalin is chemically similar to amphetamines but has less pronounced side effects AFAIK

if taken in small doses, then yes. if taken in the "recreational" dose range, then no, of course not, thats not why they're taken in those doses. but its well known that students do take small amounts of speed etc to improve concentration and staying power prior to exams.
