My PC running windows XP home edition has gone silent. It seems to be that a volume control program has gone missing. I can't get the sound back.

Click Start->Control Panel and check Sound and Audio Devices, click the Audio tab. Are there any devices listed there? The first tab listed Volume will let you place the Volume control icon on the system tray if that is all that the problem is.

Thanks for the reply. I tried as you suggested: I got an error message telling me that the Volume Control Program has not been installed. Anyway the sound had come back after I posted but louder than before. I do not understand what happened.
