I'm just starting out - would it be worth a trip to bikeworld on the long mile road?

NNNNNNNNNooooooooo, for the love of baby Jesus and all that's holy please do not go anywhere near that place if you are starting off. They have a big barrel inside the door and they make you bend over it when you come in. Then the sales staff wallet rape you
Those guys can spot a newbie bike at fifty paces and they'll take you for everything you're worth. Its best for you to do as much online research as you can on the type of bike you like and try a couple of different ones on for size in different shops.

Buying bikes is soo much fun, take your time, visit as many shops as you can and try and bag a bargin.

or what you can do, and this is fun, is to go in keep them talking for about 15 minutes, think they have the sale and then just change your mind
If you are looking for gear, its handy to try stuff on there 1st, or if you like rummaging around for a good deal, head over to cotters, a hell of a lot cheaper and a lot better service

Rang bikeworld a while back about a pressed metal number plate. They said about 40 notes. Got it in mountjoy for 12.50

Hein Gericke have a shop in the North, iirc............I got a pressie of a HG outfit a few years ago - brilliant stuff.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Cotter Motorcycles are in Ballymount in Walkinstown.
By far the cheapest shop around for motorcycle gear.

Bikeworld do have a relatively vast and well stocked store. Triumph and Kawasaki can only be found new in that store, in Dublin at least. Doing a lot of looking everywhere, including Bikeworld, without making any commitment, is a perfectly reasonable way to go. All these store, Cotters included, have provided negative experiences to some. Bikeworld seems to have failed to make the grade for more than a few, but there is no better place to see and sit on a lot of bikes.

Bikeworld are fine for gear, but i personally wouldnt buy a bike from them.
If you want to go looking for gear, ask for Helen... she's a fantastic friendly gal, and knows what customer service means.
Fwiw, bikeworlds prices on Lookwell and some Dainese stuff is not too far off the mark, considering if you have and issue it'll get replaced on the spot, and you're not looking at emails and posting stuff back.

I've been a bike-life long critic of BW, until recently. As is said, I still wouldnt buy a bike there, but I'd buy gear there again.

The Lookwell range is good stuff at very decent prices, its made in holland-so you avoid the sterling charge, and its not Dainese style name-costly either.
If money isnt an issue, you could get a very good quality dainese jacket and dainese gortex pants for circa 600euro. The most expensive lookwell jacket+pants will cost you 400/450. Both makes have removeable inner liners for winter/summer use. Considering the weather over here, a summer jacket is very usually too cold I find.
Akito and Alpinestars also do good quality stuff.
If you've the money to spar, look towards getting a back protector also, they cost from 80-200 euro and are a good buy. They feel quite bulky the first time you wear it, but before long you feel naked without it :) Some jackets come with back protection, but its about as useful as a wodge of butter in an oven.

As for gloves, you cant go wrong with dainese goretex gloves at 120euro, or Lookwell airpro/articpro gloves at 70euro. You can get cheaper gloves, but both these are very waterproof and warm. The lookwell ones are more bulky/wintery though.

As for boots... its up to your own taste/budget really(as is everything else obviously) I had a pair of alpine stars Roam waterproof boots. They cost about 150euro and lasted 3 years :) Never let in water at all.

Theres lots more stuff to choose from, as I said Helen wont steer you wrong.
Any of the gear Im suggesting has been tested by me over 70 thousand kilometeres in the last 2 years, every day, all weathers.

As for buying a bike, theres good savings to be made by buying privately, but try find somebody who knows what they're looking at to check it over/test ride it for you. As a general rule, avoid bikes with rusty exhausts. Its very rare to find a scrappy looking bike thats in top mechanical condition.

I've bought two bikes now from BikeWorld, haven't had a problem. Found them quite nice and professional really. I like the way they give you a little kit of motorbike tips and stuff, they'll also help you sort your insurance plus give you a card that entitles you to 10% discount on items for a year... A year is pretty good?

Also, they gave me a real decent price on the trade-in last time. In fact, when your man said how much he'd give me for my old bike I was doing the, "erm, yeah, I suppose" whilst desparately trying to stop myself grinning like a mad thing and shouting "Hell yes give it to me". First time I ever traded in a bike and actually got more than I expected (though I do be very conservative in my estimations which helps).

Anyhow, don't see at all why you shouldn't give them a go. They've a good range to give you ideas on where to start.

    I can 2nd the gear.

Bought Dainese from them and found their prices and range to be quite good. I did find my Alpine Star boots €120 cheaper online though.. (Thanks to BW I knew what size I needed to order online  )

Also bought a helmet for the gf there.. Never bought a bike there so cant comment on that..

^ fully agree, JP motorcycles is excellent. I buy almost everything there. He gives you an unofficial lifetime discount on stuff if you have bought a bike from him. (im still gettin it and i bought the bike years ago!) plus they're not bull****ters, straight talkers and honest.

The odd time i buy gear from motomax in churchtown and find them good too.

I had 1 experience with bikeworld and although only small it put me off. few years ago i was lookin at deauvilles. Asked if they knew about honda bringing out new model. They said no, they knew nothing. less than 6 months later they had the new model in stock.

I bought my first bike in cotters when he was in terenure/kimmage. although he was cheap, the after service and customer service in general was atricious. THey might be different now, but i havent gone near them since.

I'd recommend GP motorcycles on amien street. Just bought my new hornet there, cracking bunch of lads and really helpful.

I bought my first bike in JP. Had one hiccup with them regarding a service but would recommend them too.
