I'm thinking of getting the s9600 and was wondering if you can get a clear lens cover for it to keep it from getting marked or scratched while using it ,or is there any need and are pixmania an ok place to buy from.

I hate run on sentences as I find them annoying as hell do you know what I mean?

    /rant

The 9600 is a fairly good prosumer camera, outside of the faux viewfinder that annoys me no end. Yes, you can get a cover. It'll take any filter of 58mm size.

Sorry,I use an onscreen keyboard, and have to keep reminding myself to use commas and fullstops.

Do you mean a UV filter?
That's what I use to protect my lenses as they're only a few quid and I usually charm one off the vendor, when I'm buying a lens.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,407 ✭✭✭gerky

Yea,I think a uv filter would be the handiest. Can they be left in full time or do they interfere.Does the s9600 take a screw in, if so would this one be ok. http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/112985/art/cokin/s231-58-58-mm-diameter-sc.html

Yes, I leave them on all the time as the lens cap fits over them.

I'm not sure, it's hard to tell from this, but it looks like you can.

I'm not being rude, so excuse me if it comes across that way, but your best bet is to visit a camera store, ask for a demo of the model. Get a feel for it. Ask any questions you have, then go away and mull over it. If you think of any further questions, you can always go back again or go to another store.

Buy the filter when you buy the camera, so that you can be sure you're getting right size.

like every1 else UV is the way forward, I use one on every lens of mine to protect the glass.
    think the thread is 55mm.
where were U looking at it and how much was it?
should really be 499 now for the camera and about 549 with a 2gbcf and a case.

Nope. It's bigger than that. 99% confident its a 58/62mm. I used to have a 9500...essentially the same camera.

Does it have to be Gunns?
I'll be in town later and could saunter around a few shops, but wont be going south.
If you genuinely can't get to a camera shop, I could look into answers for a few of those questions.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,407 ✭✭✭gerky

Genuinely can't get to a shop.Don't want to put you out,but if you don't mind and aren't busy that would be great. It doesn't have to be Gunns.

You wouldn't be putting me out.
I'm worse than women for shopping! :o
Think there might be something wrong me.
Just have to make sure that I don't go in looking at the camera for you and end-up spending money on something for myself. :D

Thanks for all the help guys.I rang a few places Stephen, from past experiance on other items I tend not to always trust getting technical info over the phone, in a lot of cases their either wrong or will say anything to make a sale.
Its things like this that let you see what a encyclopedia of info boards is

    Gunnes just rang me back:-

€504 with the 2Gb card and case. Now thats what I call a bargain.

in a lot of cases their either wrong or will say anything to make a sale.

My mate got me one in the states for €260.... Isn't it €380 on pixmania??? Hell of alot cheaper than any of the shops i've seen.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 66 ✭✭daenis

It's 380 without the card or case. 487 including 2gb card as case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭City-Exile

    Pixels are always more expensive.
They had the 400D for €899 while it was €769 in Dixons.
They try to pretend that you're getting some kind of a deal by throwing in some overpriced memory card.

Sorry jaqian didn't make my post very clear I meant technical info as in the size of filter to fit it and such.Thats a big difference in price compared to where I rang, again thanks for the help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

I wouldn't be swayed by throw-in-a-memory-card deals, since you can get 2GB CF/SD cards for absolutely peanuts online now.

    Hi

I bought a s9600 from pixmania, under €400 including postage, http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/392384/art/fuji/finepix-s9600.html it arrives in a few days from France, the manual is in french but you can download one in english from here http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital/lineup/s9600/images/fx_s9600.pdf

you can get a fast 4gb CF card here, they're in Kildare postage is €5 I think. http://www.shop4memory.com/products/compactflash-card.asp

I'm really happy with the s9600, its easy to use but you can adjust all the settings manually if you wish.

    Good Luck,
    Stephen

Thanks for the info Quackles, some really nice pics you should enter one of the person in dark room in the current competition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭City-Exile

Right, I go all the way to Pixels and your questions have already been answered! :(
Seems like a decent enough camera.
    Quite solid.
Wouldn't be my choice but life would be boring, if we all liked the same things.

I owe you one so City-Exile,if you were in my shoes what would you buy.

No worries. I figured that if you already selected the camera then you were familiar with its specs.

You're right though most shop assistants haven't a clue (Gunnes the exception) so when I want to get the specs I go to dpreview.com. Very handy.

    Specs of S9600

    This first anyway! :D

    What's your budget?
What subject will you photograph most freaquently?
What is important to you, in your pictures?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,407 ✭✭✭gerky

    :D
    About 450-520,Mostly nature,good zoom,decent macro.
I'm not inclined to get an slr yet.I'm More or less looking for an all rounder I like the flip out screen on s9600.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,484 ✭✭✭Quackles

Flip out screen is nice, but I don't use it half as much as I thought I would. The camera does take nice macro and nature shots. I think its greatest weakness is lowlight photography - if that is very important to you, keep looking. Otherwise, a good choice. I never regretted it, anyway.

Just a word of caution with regard to Pixmania. I have bought several items from them over the last two years - 3 x Sony camcorders, 2 x DVD players and a Canon Pixma printer. Recently when kicking around the idea of purchasing a Canon 400D digital SLR I checked out their website. Imagine my surprise when I found the they were selling the camera for the same price as PC World in Ireland and almost 30 euro dearer than Argos locally. On top of that they will charge an extra 13 euro for delivery. So much for online shopping!! Even worse when I did a quick comparison on the prices Pixmania charge in other EU staes I found that in Germany and Spain the quoted price was 100 (yes - one hundred) Euro cheaper than for Ireland. I emailed them indicating my disgust at the differential only to receive a reply from them stating that the difference was due to tax. Now, maybe I'm wrong but I thought that the only applicable tax between EU states was VAT and in Ireland this is 21%. In Germany it is 19% a 2% difference which does not explain the 13% difference in the product price between the two countries. Is this another example of ripping off the unfortunate Irish consumer by relating the price to what they think the market will bear?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,724 ✭✭✭Dilbert75

In contrast to that they are selling the S9600 for €379.50 + delivery. My local PC World and my local photo shop are selling the same one, with no extras for, €549/550. Big difference in that case. But your point stands - check it out before you buy.

Edit: just checked, the German version is selling the above for €377, while the Spanish version is selling it for €394 and the Italian version for €409
