    I always tell marathoners, do what you want the rest of the week but make sure you include the following 3 sessions in your plan
    1. long run
    2. tempo run
    3. intervals

    The tempo run may not bring the same physical response as the speedwork but it plays an important psychological role. Knowing you can run on when you're tired is important as distances increase.

    The author says "1:1 ratio of work to recovery" but doesn't explain if that is time or distance based? The approach I usually take is to let HR drop back down below 70% before starting the next rep.

    yes I've done them occassionally but they're not a regular thing with me. I know loads of people who love them though.
