I have a new computer on the way and am just wondering if transferring data will simply be a case of whipping out the old HDs (IDE) and plugging them into the new computer.
The old PC is running windows 2000 pro and the new one will be running vista, will the OS on the old HDs cause any problems? Any specific software I will need?
    Thanks

You could install the win2000 HDD into the Vista PC alright. No other software needed. The Vista PC may use SATA for its own hard drive, so just use primary IDE header etc.

Another option is to create a shared folder on the Vista PC, network the 2 PCs and transfer all your data over night!

    OR

An external hard drive which can double as backup too.

Lots of options really when transferring data!

If the files you want on the old drive are stored in a user profile ie in my document folder, you may get an access denied message when you try to access them if u put the drive as a slave in the new pc, in this case you could either take ownership of the files in vista or simply move the files to a folder on the root of c:\ on win2k b4 u remove the drive and put it in a new pc

Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated. Now that i think of it I may have an old 10 gig drive at home that i could use to transfer the data either.
    Thanks again
