I've finally done it! Find some bandmates

    Hi there,
after a long while using these forums and other forums I decided a while ago to have a go at creating a Bandmate/Musician Search specifically for Ireland...in hope that it would eventually find me a band.

Anyways...I'm pretty much finished now, I would really appreciate if a few ppl signed up and tried it out and gave me some feedback.

Basically the main feature is the ad search on the left. You can seach specifically for musicians suiting your needs. I have added in loads of other things too, ie a private message service, a place for selling equipment, forums, etc etc.

If anyone could give me some feedback, recommendations for improvements etc it would be greatly appreciated. It's purely a private website that I set up myself. Hope you find it useful!

    www.squeezeboxireland.com

    Thanks,
    D_O_C

Just had time for a quick peep, but it seems like a well thought out site. Will probably join up later. good luck with it. :)

cool, thanks a lot. I have put a lot of time into it! Didn't think it would take so long.

Like I said, I am still developing and would take suggestions from anyone who has any.

Oh, and you can advertise your gig there too! Could show up on the homepage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,457 ✭✭✭Rigsby

You'll have to advertise the site to death for it to succeed. There was another Irish site for musicians that I joined. It recently closed after about a year. The most people I ever saw on line at one time were five !
Dont mean to be negative, just letting you know what you are up against. Once again, I hope it's a success. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19 D_O_C

maybe, but it's not costing much to have it up. I did all the workmyself so it's not really costing me much to keep it running.

I guess time wil tell anyways!

Looks great and great Idea - I know theres's a US site called virtual band that lets musicians upload their tracks as well so other can layer their versions on and form bands that way.

Well done and best of luck !

    thanks joe.

Yea, I was thinking about the song uploads alright. I am working on it at the moment but it will just require a bit more server space to store the songs...but hopefully I will get that working. It would be quite useful alright to be able to hear a few samples of peoples music. I'll keep you updated anyways!

Fair play D_o_c, the site looks pretty neat. I might join at some stage, but not yet. Not looking for a band at the mo, and I'm not selling anything. I'll keep it in my internet favs though.

hey im just after registering. Its a great, easy to nagivate site. if you want it to work, you are going to need to advertise it, if you dont get a lot or users fast, when people log on to try and find a band member they will get pissed off if their search is returning no results. my advise would be:
    - Print a **** load of flyers, maby 4 on 1 A4 page to reduce costs. stand outside
gigs in the ambassador/point......etc and give to them to people AFTER the gig (they will only lose it, if you give it to them before the gig!). this would probably be best at a metal of hard rock gig, as most metal heads play an instrument!
    - get small bands to announce your site at their gigs, and hand out more filers there
    - put a poster up in the 2 waltons in dublin, leave some fiyers in the shops as well

the site is a great idea, hope it works!
    good luck!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19 D_O_C

thanks for the advise, think I will do that. I'd have to get a bit of interest going as soon as possible, otherwise like you said, ppl will just get p***ed off.

    Watch out for the flyers!

    Hi OP

Good site, good work - I registered...is there a way to edit your ads when you log into the site though? It only gives options to place an ad, not take an ad off or amend the text you've put it. I thought if I went over the 400 characters allowed that the cursor wouldn't let me type any more and now I think I typed out 4 million but you can still only see 400 and it ends mid sentence! I'd like to amend it will you let me know if you get a chance? Thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19 D_O_C

thanks for the suggestions, I will try and get on them as sonn as possible..especially the ad editing. I willl try and get it working so that you can edit ads soon, or at least delete them.....I'm on it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19 D_O_C

    Hi there,
I have given my site a bit of a facelift. I have also taken some of the suggestions on board and made a few improvements sure as the ability to edit/delete your ads. I will keep making relevant improvements whenever I have a chance and if anyone has any more suggestions send them my way. You can email at editor@squeezeboxireland.com

Otherwise feel free to have a browse around, search musicians, advertise your gigs, place equipment ads etc etc.

Again any feedback would be welcome.:)

    Thanks,
    D_O_C

Sorry, had just checked it in Firefox. Some alignment issues to sort out in explorer it seems!

Hey D_O_C well done on creating the site, i'm now a member.

A good idea might be to put an ad in the Buy and Sell, thats where some people look when trying to find band mates.

Also, maybe the personals in the music magazines such as hotpress. Anything that might be free really.

    Fair dues!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19 D_O_C

Cool thanks for that. Might try Hotpress. Unfortunately my attempt at an ad in Buy and Sell was rejected as they said it was competing directly with them. Oh well!

Wow great site! It's about time there's a site like this specifically for Ireland.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,911 ✭✭✭Zombienosh

I just signed up there, but for the life of me i cant find where/how you make ads?!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19 D_O_C

    Hiya,
to post an ad there is a "Place an ad" link on the links sidebar on every page. You can use this to place an ad once you sign in. Also when you sign in and go to your member homepage there is a "Place an ad" link in your user menu.

    Hope this helps,
Any more problems send them on,
    D_O_C

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 276 ✭✭AndyTheDude

And how can I browse ads? I can see only three recent ones....

no, theres no place an ad link, maybe its a firefox problem?!

edit: i just tryed it on IE and i still dont see it...... hmm

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19 D_O_C

I don't know if you don't see the link to be honest. It's fine on my Firefox and IE. It's right below the musician search on the left. There is a list of links:Place an ad,Browse Musicians, Browse Equipment, Browse Teachers, Sell Equipment, and Forums. It's the first one of those which is on the top of the left menubar. If you login and go to the My Squeezebox tab you can also click the "Place an ad" link which is the fifth link in your member menu right after "Send a message" and before "Sell Equipment".

To search previous ads you just use the "Musician Search" on the left hand side. You specify your search option, ie I am a [whatever] searching for a [whatever] in [wherever]. You can view all ads by choosing any, any, and all to view all the ads that have been placed.

    Hope this helps.

Yeah, there seems to be a problem with the signup page, getting a 'page cannot be found' error.

Sorry about that. All up and running again. Problem with the signup page on the server.

    Hi there,
been a while since I have made any substantial developments to the site until now.

I have finally found the time to add a resources section to my site. Not entirely dissimilar to resources here....but different.

The resources are divided into categories for books, websites, software..etc. Anyone can simply add a resource, plus it's details without logging in.

Also I have added studios in the resource section. To add a studio you must log in but this allows you to add all information about the studio and add photos which can be updated and deleted later by logging in again.

I hope this is helpful. Hopefully some studios will enter there details and it will be a useful reference to see what's out there. Any other resources that you may find helpful also feel free to add them. Just go to the homepage and click "resources" on the left menu.

    Again...any suggestions always welcome...

    Thanks a lot,
    D_O_C

    Hi!

I tried it and it worked really good. Mabye you should add "Songwriter" oder "Composer" to your kind of musicians, because there are some musicians who write songs but don't play an instrument.

But it's a really great idea!

    Hi,
a few years and a new login later I'm doing some updates to this website and giving it a facelift at the moment.

If anyone would like to let me know what they think and possibly any suggestions for new features as I will have a go at expanding some of the functionality now that I'm doing some work on it.

Seems to be of use to people but just need to get a bigger group of users for it to be really helpful I think.

Let me know what you think anyway! Oh and I have set up a facebook page for it as well if anyone would like to give me a "like" :)

I noticed this error. The listbox doesn't like the fada in Bodhrán:

    I'm running Firefox 3.6.12.

    Cheers for that Malice_.

Discrimination against the fada in browsers :p. I will have a look at it. Hopefully you haven't seen to many other issues! Although let me know if you have, trying to identify bugs and fix anything I see at the moment.

No problem, I write web applications for a living so stuff like that tends to jump out at me :). If I see anything else I'll post on here.

    Thanks for that guys. Appreciated!

Just had to get rid of the fada in bodhran to solve that problem.

Also added comments functionality for classifieds in the past week. Adding some new bits and pieces now as I go along. Thanks for the feedback anyway.

Looks good. The "Im A Teacher" bit is good also for anyone looking to learn. Could be useful to have something like "Available for Session Work" also for people who just need a temporary player for recordings etc. Good work anyway!

    Hey man,
I notice when you click "Classifieds" and then click "Next" at the bottom of the page, the address seems to be wrong and it leads to a 404 error page.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭jimmybeige

Cool, thanks for that Fandango! Guess it stopped working when I recently updated the site's frontend.

Yea, the studio musicians is a good idea. Will definitely do that I'd say! Cheers!
