Funnily enough, this was the first thing I thought about today. A coincidence or what?

You woke up, and thought about duck penises? Personally, I usually think about breakfast at this time.

All that stuff about corkscrews and spirals would make for interesting diagrams in MS paint though.

It's a pretty interesting article but I hate the way it words evolution - particularly this bit -

Brennan believes females evolved convoluted oviducts to foil the male rapists.

"You can envision an evolutionary scenario that, as the male phallus increases in size, the female creates more barriers. You get this evolutionary arms race,"

To someone who doesn't know how evloution works you would think the female actually thinks to herself "I don't want to get raped, think I'll grow my vagina in a corkscrew shape"

Should really say something like "Convoluted oviducts would help prevent fertilisation through rape. If ducklings were less likely to survive from an absent father this trait would certainly be more likely to be passed on."

To be honest I thought you were overreacting, then I read this on page three:

"What I think is really cool is this does speak a lot about the ability of the female to have these cryptic mechanisms of choice," Brennan said."

Yes. You choose your evolutionary path.

/me goes off to evolve wings.

I was going to disagree with you and point out that for sheer linguistic convenience evolution is often referred to as having a will or goal. While its not technically accurate, if suffices for most uses.

Then I saw the quote above from minesjackdaniels. Good lord, what ignorance.

Weird, the duck penis subject came up this morning. I was walking through Stephen's Green and there were ducks preening themselves. Then one starts preening it's crotch and I thought "What the hell, ducks can auto-fellate?".

I know, but it really shouldn't. It's difficult enough to comprehend in the first place.
