great stuff as usual Paddy, especially the first and second. Have to get to some drifting sometime, I'd love to have a go of photographing it.

Paddy ... we (Elven, Sineadw, Rymus, Mikeyanywhere, Fajitas!, myself) were just discussing you the other night ...

... all our outings to date seem to be to shoot static subject matter ... It would be very interesting to shoot moving items ...

... would you be willing to be the leader of a boards meet ? ... as in provide a group with a tutorial in shooting fast moving objects to the kind of effect you get above ?

No problem guys but the only problem is where ...

I was hoping you would have the suggestion there ... if you want to do something in the Dublin area then I can put you up ... if it involves an over night stay ... but to be fair we are due a trip to meet the rest of the gang half way ... so North Munster / South Leinster would be fine also

The main problem is I wouldn't be able to secure all you guys press passes for a round of Prodrift, as it would involve too many people within the danger area. I have notes scribbled down somewhere about each track, which lenses etc I must scan in and share !

Are all the events on in Mondello park ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,406 ✭✭✭brianon

Phew...that took a fair bit of searching.

    Round 1..............Mondello Park, Kildare........April 28/29th
    Round 2..............Rosegreen, Tipperary.........May 19/20th
    Round 3..............Nutts Corner, Belfast.........June 9/10th
    Round 4..............Punchestown, Kildare.........July 28/29th
    Round 5..............Mondello Park, Kildare........August 18/19th
    Round 6..............Rosegreen, Tipperary.........September 22/23rd

Prodrift Battle Of Nations ............................October 20/21st

... I guess the real point of the exercise is to give whomever goes along the chance to learn and share experiences about shooting moving objects ...

... on this basis it does not necessarily need to be at Mondello ... but it would have to be an event where there is lots of motion and easy access ... even something simple like a polo match in the Phoenix park may work ... though I have to say if there is any way to shoot fast moving cars hurtling around a muddy track with the risk of a high speed collision then this is more appealing to me personally ... perhaps a road rally ?

Fantastic work as always Paddy. Love the mud spray in no. 2. Really nice.

whats the deal with access? I'd be interested in going up to see the event in Rosegreen next month but I dont really want to go all the way up only to be told to feck off or something.

I think it must have been before I came - I was sober enough at the pub.. It was your house that I was out of it :D

Well if you are a student of media studies or such like ... Join NUJ ... they have student membership for €10 ... and they issues a student press card ... but you need to get you tutor to sign the form ..

That probably wont do you much good. You need to be media accredited with work published regularly over the X amount of time to get a Motorsport Ireland pass and even that wont guarantee you access. PD is not an MSI event, for obvious reasons they don't want many people on the infield as the more there are the more chances there are of someone being hurt.

All macho BS aside, these guys are initiating a drift at 90-100mph and when they go off they go off spectacularly with often no escape zone. I wont have someone at risk resting on my shoulders. I've had my fair share of close calls & only for I'm doing it so long & partly thanks to luck I've never been hurt.

I'll keep an eye to the motorsport calendar for a round of the Irish Tarmac Championship or something, shooting the bikes road racing is an uber-skill level ! Start with rallying methinks ...

Ah well. Four wheels bad two wheels good. Standing at the Metropole Corner on the NW200 they slow down enough that you get a passing chance. I didn't realise its next week though! Where *does* the time go :)

That Prodrift stuff sounds scary BTW.

I'm not trying to put anyone off it like, its just your going to be stepping into a very professional enviroment where safety is key. If you stand in the wrong place even once, your out the gate and asked not to come back. I've seen it happen, you really have to know on top of the photograph your taking what is going on around you and say for instance, This silvia is coming towards me, has good angle & good smoke but a bit too much speed. Can he scrub the speed off using more angle ? Left foot brake ? Touch of handbrake to slow him down ? If he doesnt start to slow down where can I hide ? Whats the nearest object that doesnt move ?

All this goes through your head in a flash as well as thinking; 'Hmmm, I think I need to slow down the shutter a tad to really emphasise his movement ?'

I might enquire with the boss that maybe if I can stage a photography competition and the winner gets track access ?

There must be something hot-roddish happening on regular basis. I found that to be great panning practice anyway. Certainly the fence at the Pike in Dungarvan is big enough to get most lenses through (its a small track, something in the 70mm and below region is more than adequate for 90% of it.).

Taken at a recent RaceDay. I need much more practice....
