Value of a Land Rover

    Hi,

I looked at a Series III Land Rover yesterday - smokey (diesel) engine, flakey chassis (can prob replace sections), rust bubbles on bulkhead under clutch, electrical issues and a couple of other minor issues. Seller was looking 3K. Looking at UK sites, they sell from around STG £1200 to £14,000 from dealers. The cheaper ones have patched chassis and maybe bulkhead whereas the dearer ones usually have galvanised chassis and everything sorted. The dealers do seem to be enthusiasts and the cheaper ones do seem to be good value for money.

I know that they're primitive and slow - I'm looking for one for short trips, load lugging - appearance isn't important.

What is the one that I looked at really worth? (ball park will do)

Are the cheaper ones from enthusiast dealers in the UK worth a go or are they likely to be moneypits?

Can anyone recommend a good source for a cheaper series II or III?

    Thanks

The UK Ministry of Defence release loads of landrovers to companies like P. A. Blanchard and because the UK tax payer has already paid for them they tend to be quite cheap ;-)

I have owned 2 LWB landrovers in the past and would say that my basic rule of thumb is that if the chasis is bad then walk away.

Are you looking for short or long wheelbase? I was a member of the Lincolnshire Land Rover club and might know someone there with something to interest you :-)

Thanks for the links. Blanchards look interesting - I'll keep an eye on them - nothing there at the moment that suits me.

I'm not fussy whether its LWB or SWB, petrol or diesel. Basically I'm looking for a solid bulkhead and chassis, mechanically in good shape, overdrive would be a bonus. Must be a hard top and pre 1978. Would like it to be cheap :D

Any leads or contacts would be much appreciated.

Still have to show you that GT6 but the clutch slave is on its way out and I don't want to risk a run to Dublin in case it gives up altogether. I haven't found the time to tackle it - its a simple job but a bit of a pig to get at.

three k should buy you something in need of tidying, but not welding.

some people think there landies are worth a fortune and some just give em away.

109s tend to be cheap enough so keep an eye on ebay

I sold an Irish reg Series 3 last year with a ropey chassis and with a cracked block/ head (never bothered to find out which) for 250 euros and that was plenty for it... the guy clearing my site was going to squash it with the Hymac:D

Sounds a bit like the one that I went to see

From what I can see both here and in the UK - its a lot like JohnBoy says - some people sell them for realistic money and some people ask for a lot... Reading between the lines in the ads there isn't always a lot between the dear and cheap ones in terms of condition.

250 was good value though - even for parts.

This station wagon model to your liking?
(It's quite expensive at £3500 but A1 condition. See more details)

P.S. I got a new camera (Canon EOS 5D) so I'd be interested in photographing the GT6. My wife still won't let me buy it though ;-)

Looks great! I'd be interested in the details....

The GT6'll be on the road again in a couple of weeks - I just have to put down a wooden floor....

Arrgh! Just saw the age of it - really need a pre '78 - could live with a year or two but that's the limit. Will post my progress....

Ooh - found a red one!
See this dealer in Grantham (Lincolnshire)

It's a lot of money (£4750) but with the much rarer 6-cyl petrol motor.

Or - there are good land rover magazines (e.g. Land Rover Owner or Land Rover World) that have lots and lots for sale in the classifieds - like This Series 3 lightweight , this 101 forward control, this 1968 short wheelbase 2a ...

Thanks for the links. That LWB red one is nice - the one below it with the big shovel looks good too. Found myself in Eason's today looking through the Land Rover Enthusiast magazines which has to be a new low for an ex-city boy. Noticed that the private ads have lots of examples with galvanised chassis for around £2k plus which is around what I'd like to pay. I've mailed a few specialists and am waiting to hear back.

I've a better idea of what I'm looking for now so making progress...
