I've bought a new widescreen monitor to replace a crt monitor on my 3 year old compaq. All applicationa now look too wide and are shortened. Can I make adjustments to display these programmes at the old aspect ratio?

LCD displays only really have one "native" resolution that looks right as they have discrete pixels (unlike a CRT screen which is all very vague). You need to find out what the native res. is (should say in the manual or the menu on the monitor) and change it to that in the Display Properites in Windows (right click on desktop -> Properties, or go to Control Panel).

If Windows has detected the monitor properly the native resolution is usually the highest you can choose, however this is not always the case.
