    Hello all,

Please forgive my maybe stupid questions. I'm a bloody beginner and have no clue. On top of that a foreigner as well...

Today I bought an used scooter. I did't recieved any documents with it. The only official things I have is the tax disc (ceased in 2006) and the number plate.

Next monday I want to go to register it in order to use it. From what I understood is that I need the insurance first to get the motor tax. Is there anything else requested? Is there no need of a proof of ownership? The person I bought it from took my address and told me she will go to the Gardai to register me as the new user.

I already rang CaroleNash for an insurance quote and have their reference number. They told me they could do this on the spot over the phone.

Can I regardless go on monday to the tax office and register it?

I'm eager to drive the scooter as soon as possible, not just here in the estate's yard... :D

    Thanks vor every advise!
    TC

You must have the vehicle registration certificate in your name before you are able to tax it - did you complete any forms with the seller?

Have a look at this link which explains what should happen and what form you need.

If the bike has not been taxed since 2006, you may also have to get a form stamped by the gardai to state that it's been off the road (and therefore exempt from road tax) - otherwise you're likely to have to pay the arrears of tax as well..... (maybe the previous owner will get that sorted for you)

    gipi, thanks for that.

I haven't signed or filled out any forms. I just bought the scooter by cash at their place. I've asked her if there is any paperwork do do (because it looked strange to me just to take it and drive it away) but the ex-owner only took my address and said that she will go to the Guardai to de-register herself and register me as the new owner.

Or maybe it's just me and my german uber-concern... :D:confused:

Sorry mate, but the Gards dont do change of owner ship. It is done in Shannon by the department of the environment. You need the vehicle registration certificate, the old owner must sign it and then you must fill out your current address and sign it. The owner must have it. If they dont, there is a site online that will give you the details. But it cost like €20. For the life of my I cant remember the site name or address. But I am sure someone here will know it.

What type of scooter is it and year? How much did you pay? I ask as it may have been stolen. Dont meant to scare you, but you can never tell.

If the girl doesn't know about the vehicle registration certificate, she can contact the department of the Environment and they will send a copy out to the registered address of the scooter.

Sorry for pointing out the obvious, but do you have a license to drive it? If it's a moped under 50cc and less then 45kmh then you can drive on a Irish/EU B license, but anything other then that and you'll need an A1 license.

Also sounds a bit dodgy(sp?) from the seller, they should have shown you the registration documents to prove they actually did own it

    Hi,

    I have a provisional license, it's a Suzuki AE50, reg plate is from 2000.
If it is dodgy - I have their address, I've been in their house :D

Thats good and I hope it does turn out alright for you. But, and it's a bit late now, you should always check the vehicle reg cert to match the frame/enigne numbers with that on the bike( and car) before handing over your cash. If it's nicked then you loose out not them.

Not saying it happened to you but on a BBC show last year they sold a hire car to about 10 people from a house that they didn't own. When the people returned to collect the car and pay the remaining money all that was there was other buyers. They made between £100-£300 off each person.
