Receiving RTE in the UK

I'm originally from ROI, but currently living in England and interested in receiving RTE via satellite. I've read various threads on here suggesting opening an account with Sky Ireland using an address in Ireland and then merely transfering the card into the box in England. But firstly, as I'm under 18 I couldn't legally sign up, and secondly, I really wouldn't feel too happy about paying Rupert Murdoch 30 or so Euros a month just to receive RTE, the greedy **** already has plenty  .

Although, I do have a Sky box and minidish, so if there is anyway of getting a cheap inactive Irish card off ebay or something and receiving RTE that would be an option. I have a satellite box and 2 metre dish, is there any satellite I can get RTE for free off?

    Thanks.

    Hi, welcome.

    Your scenario won't work.

    a) you can't legally buy a Sky card of any shape on ebay (cards remain property of SSSL) They should not be traded.
    b) RTÉ is only available on a vaild Irish or Northern Ireland Sky subscription. Gotta pay Rupe. :(

Thanks for the quick, informative response :). In the unlikely event I reluctantly pay Sky, I currently have no address in Ireland I could use. Any advice there?

No worries. :) The only way then is see if a friend or relative can use their Irish address for billing/sending the card to. Payment by a UK credit card is ok, unless that loophole has been closed recently.

You can pay with any country's Visa or Master credit cards, you can use Irish debit cards, however you cant use a UK debit card or bank account.

Theres plenty of sites selling them on the web a simple search will reveal those, however to discuss such activity's on these boards is taboo.

However in Eu law as long as you validly pay for valid card, you can use it where you like. It is even suspected that as long as Sky can officially show they are not selling directly out of region, they don't actually care. After all they getting the 22 Euro. No piracy is involved. The number of Sky accounts in Spain is amazing and While Gibraltar is British, Sky won't sell a sub there. They have them ANYWAY, and none turned off.

Since BBC stop using a card, and changed to 2D the out of area reception probably fell. Before people in Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, Southern Italy etc had Sky/FTV cards. Presumably a lot them still do for C4!

Technically you should only obtain a Sky card personally, as it belongs to Sky and it is illegal for someone to sell one. However someone obtaining it on you behalf is a grey area, so we don't discuss it here.
