They seriously have become one of the worst ISPs in Ireland, too bad cause they used to be the best.

Works ok for me, all 'cept one of the pictures displayed grand.

    NTL 6MB service in Galway...

About 3 don't show up for me unless I use the proxy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,558 ✭✭✭CyberGhost

Rigger, no, it's not only that website, imagevenue isn't working on others too.

    And some websites aren't loading

Can you guys see if you can get to any of the vegas casino websites. None of them work for me but they are fine when I use the proxy listed above.

Here is another one that does not work

    http://www.moma.org/

It is the Museum of modern art one of the kids needed it for a project in school about 3 months ago I rang NTL as they could access it in school and friends could get it on dsl they promised to fix it 3 months ago still waiting

NTL are the worst ISP in Ireland

neither can I, tried using another dns server like http://www.opendns.com/ ?

Could it be an MTU issue? I'm not sure how Cable modems i teract wiith PC's, buti if there's a network card in the mix, it might be breaking up your oage request into chunks that aare too small.

I used to have a problem on my first DSL connection - some sites would not load up at all on one machine, and fine on others, and a few minutes on google lead me to the program below:

Get TCPOpimizer from www.speedguide.net and see if it can make any recommendations to your setup. (It will make registry changes, but you can back them up). I've been using it for years to tweak various PC's without issues, but YMMV.

Speedguide also can analyse your setup without downloading a program,(click on TCP/IP Analyser) and may be able to give you some pointers.

This all assumes you're using a PC :)

NTL has been doing this for months now. Any sites hosted by Yahoo won't show, loads of the pic sharing sites won't show - it's a mess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

The server at www.moma.org is taking too long to respond.

Looks like that site has a problem. Everything else here OK. (I'm not on NTL).

Can anyone get http://archive.org and use the wayback machine there. I've been using proxies to use it of late?

Edit: www.moma.org is available for me just not by NTL, I can get it by proxy however.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 309 ✭✭wardie

I'm on NTL in D15 and can get http://archive.org and use the wayback machine there no problem

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,558 ✭✭✭CyberGhost

Above posted links didn't work for me either.

Also I've noticed that p2p speeds spike up high to normal after 2:00am.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,454 ✭✭✭cast_iron

I've got NTL and Eircom (both 2mb in D2).
Moma times out on NTL, fine on Eircom.

Edit: The Eircom response time (time before page begins to load) is probably 3 times quicker than that of NTL.

Have any of you tried basic fault tracking methods?

Have you checked if its your local dns server that is failing to resolve these domains?

Have you checked if you can ping/traceroute to the domains?

    Yes I have.

    Pings time out.

Tried directly through the modem(without any dns configs) didn't work either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,007 ✭✭✭Moriarty

Where does a traceroute begin to time out? Does it time out at the same point for each site you're having problems accessing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,558 ✭✭✭CyberGhost

Well moma.org, was the only site that does not load for me. Imagevenue does not load partialy, so, I don't know exactly how to tracert that.

moma.org started timing out at the end(14th node), after 12.125.58.50, tried resolving it, but it says, there is no domain for that IP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,007 ✭✭✭Moriarty

12.125.58.50 is owned by AT&T, so whatever the problem is, it's not NTL/UPC causing it. ICMP may even be blocked after that host.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,454 ✭✭✭cast_iron

    My tracert gives:

    On NTL:

But why does it work for eircom then?

and if AT&T is blocking ntl, isn't that ntl's problem?

www.bellagio.com <= doesn't work for me ... any luck with anybody else??

    Nope, doesn't work.

Same here. Works on Eircom, but not on NTL.

Guys, does anyone know what the story is with them blocking the websites? I just spoke to them there because I want to book a room in the Bellagio but I can't and have to wait til I go on a non-NTL connection to do it, it's so annoying! They said that they don't block websites at all, and it must be my firewall?

Somehow I doubt it since everyone else here seems to be having the same problem .... ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,007 ✭✭✭Moriarty

NTL aren't blocking it at all. Their DNS servers seem to be a touch screwed though, as they aren't resolving the above domains.

Simple to work around it though.. just add another dns server into your connection profile (I use 194.145.128.1, a BT Ireland dns server).

To do that in windows XP, go to your control panel, network connections, right click on Local Area Network or Wireless Network (whichever one is used for the internet for you) and go to properties. In the general tab, scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), select it and click the properties button. In the new window which pops up, change to the "Use the following DNS addresses:" and put 194.145.128.1 in the first box. You can enter a second dns server in the second box such as the OpenDNS server 208.67.222.222, or leave it blank.

Everything should work as normal then (it is here, and I'm using NTL).

    Still no go Moriarty :/

Does moma.org time out for you if you use the ntl dns servers?( 89.101.160.5 / 89.101.160.4 )

It could be mtu problems , maybe whatever is dropping the traceroutes is dropping ALL icmp , which could break mtu discovery. If there is other iffy stuff along the way , the site may not load at all or maybe it'll only load the adverts or something. If its windows , get this :
    www.dslreports.com/drtcp

Something roughly like this may be happening ... you look for a webpage from moma , the server there answers and starts sending stuff back to you , if theres anything along the way that doesn't like the size , it will send an back icmp message to the server , if something is dropping ALL icmp , the server won't know about the problem and keep trying

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,468 ✭✭✭matt-dublin

could be a routing issue. i would say a faulty router.

Do a trace route from both your ntl and eircom line and see what comes back

moma.org appears to be having major service problems, I wouldn't use it as a reliable example of problems on the NTL/UPC side of things. Any of the other hosts mentioned here I've been able to access perfectly on NTL cable at home (once I've used someone elses DNS servers).

If anyone knows any techies on the UPC/NTL side of things, a quiet word about their DNS servers would seem to be appropriate. I doubt there's any point trying to raise the issue through first line support as it will almost certainly not get brought to the attention of the people that need to see it.

<edit: also, be aware that different ISPs may well have very different "looking" traceroutes. That doesn't necessarly mean that one or the other of them is broken. There can be hundreds and hundreds of valid routes to reach any one host over the internet depending on where you're connecting from.>
