Entitled to sick leave for surgery?

    Hi

I've been trying to get an appointment to get some necessary eye surgery done. The consultant has come back after 3 months with an appointment in 10 days. Great, but my manager has been particularly sticky about leave at the moment - he has already not granted leave for me to go to a friend's wedding as someone else is out at the same time. On the day of the surgery another girl is already out & if it was a normal circumstance he'd definitely say no to leave.

I really need this surgery, but can't find anything in the HR policies or legally regarding my right to be able to take this day off. Does anyone know what my situation is before I speak to him?

Off the top of my head I think that you are entitled to take time off for hospital appointments but you have no right to be paid for this time off.

EDIT: There's a section about it at the bottom of this page but I'm not sure if it would be a clear enough indication for me if I were in your position.
