A bit bizarre this one, but it is surprising the number of people who take professions of atheism personally. Personally, I think O'Callghan displays intellectual infantalism.

STATION OF THE CROSS ; DJ Raps Atheist D'Arcy 2007-04-22

    By STEPHEN MAGUIRE
GARETH O'Callaghan has started a holy war with Ray D'Arcy because the Today FM host has revealed he doesn't believe in God.
The ex-2FM star said D'Arcy should keep his personal beliefs to himself when broadcasting.
D'Arcy recently told listeners that he belonged to a section of society in Ireland that had no religion.
O'Callaghan said: "Maybe it's not trendy today to believe in a God in some shape or form. He said recently on his radio show that he didn't believe in God.
"That's fine by me but he should keep his beliefs - or 'non- beliefs' - to himself, particularly when he's dancing barefoot on a subject that still forms the cultural tapestry of who we are."
O'Callaghan said much of D'Arcy's audience was made up of impressionable young people.
He fumed: "For a broadcaster to come out with such a loose- cannon statement is nothing less than a blatant abuse of his privileges, demonstrating a level of immaturity and recklessness that makes alarm bells ring.
"Ray D'Arcy is no Gay Byrne nor will he ever be."

Jesus what a knob-end. Somehow I doubt he would have reacted the same way if he expressed allegiance in another minority 'belief' like Buddhism or Hinduism.

Forgive my ignorance, which is the radio guy who doesn't believe in a god?

    Ray D'arcy

Wasn't aware that Ray D'Arcy was an atheist! Another one bites the dust, eh!

Yeh that attack was pretty idiotic.

sounds just like that CNN thing that was posted here a while back.. Mentioning the fact that you don't believe in god is aggressive secularism these days? God forbid we ever make progress while stepping on some bizzarre notion of cultural tapestry... What does he even mean by that? We're likely to begin dressing and dancing like zulus because a radio host doesn't believe in god? This attitude truly baffles me...

Interesting to take a look at O'Callahans bio:

But for a journalist & broadcaster to come out with such crap is a damned shame.

Saw Sunshine on Saturday - good flick.
I can see where he comes from - a lot of good science in it.

Try to imagine if you can, any possible, concievable circumstances where Ray D'arcy would make a similar attack on Callaghan on the Basis that Callaghan had said he was a chrsitian. It just wouldn't happen, what a sad pathetic little country we live in.

If D'Arcy was Catholic and said on air that he was getting married in a Catholic church, or that he picked the kids up after mass no one would bat an eyelid.

Its more of this "atheists should just shut up" nonsense ... kinda sad, O'Callaghan must be quite insecure about his faith, which seems to be rather common in people who put stock in faith curing them of something, such as depression

A talk radio host gave his opinion on something? Shocking.

The issue being that he said some people shouldn't express their opinion or beliefs..

I think Crux was referring to Ray rather than Gareth. Ray is after all paid to give his opinion on things, that is why people listen to him.

What I mean is Darcy (talk radio host) expressed his opinion on religion, and O'Callaghan is freaking out, but I'm saying talk radio hosts state their opinion all the time. Why should religious opinion be any different to Darcy saying "Great song" or whatever.
EDIT: Wicknight beat me to it

    Oops
    sorry about that..

Well D'Arcy does often come across as quite skeptical at the best of times, O'Callaghan on the otherhand does have the deeply religious background. Anyway it seems more like sour grapes since D'Arcy is now the golden boy of Irish radio and O'Callaghan is over the hill.

Gareth O'Callaghan is a disgusting character. He should have ended his life years ago when he went through his depression.

Dunno about Ray but if someone ever told me I'd never be Gay Byrne I'd assume they were complimenting me.

There are two ways to read this, IMO. Either O'Callaghan is having doubts about his religion that honesty would compel him to admit he too is atheist but he's too afraid to admit to those doubts (and therefore terribly scared when he sees others get past that point), or he's a common or garden variety bigot.

From the rest of what was quoted, bigotry is my guess.

Fcuk it! I'm practising necromancy, again.

What was the context of D'arcy announcing his lack of religion? Seems a bit odd, not sure why anyone would give a hoot about D'arcy's religion.

As for the Callaghan bloke, gotta admit I've never heard of him before. Is he supposed to be famous?

Good man Gareth O Callaghan, lot more respect for him...

I had no idea who O'Callaghan was until this thread was dug up. He sounds like an arrogant little gombeen to me, like John Waters without the up-his-own-arse verbosity.

the slasher flick it turned into.

I'm struggling to see what is different with O'Callaghan complaining about Darcy and say, somebody complaining that the angelus shouldn't be aired??

O'Callaghan is saying, "Shut up godless heathen!"

Someone "complaining" that the Angelus shouldn't be aired (on RTE, at least) likely believes that RTE shouldn't give what's effectively free advertising for the Church.

    Wow, seven years.

I actually dislike D'Arcy's show. He's a fncking whingebag. Every days it's *sigh*, "God, I dunno about this country...bankers...hard pressed....struggling...jobless...politicians....". It's like Joe Duffy, but without the phone-in bit. Just Ray giving his whingey opinion and ocassionally reading out some sob story that someone has emailed in.

I have difficulty though comprehending the kind of mindset that O'Callaghan displayed. "Don't expose young people to alternative viewpoints. They might...OMG....actually listen to them."

No idea. Only thing I've an inkling of is that most people on this forum and boards in general don't like Ray.
