Bebo-loving computer-hogging sods in library

For weeks I've had assignments etc to hand in to lecturers and needed a computer to print stuff out, but I'm prevented from doing so because of these idiots on bebo shrieking things such as "ew moi gosh look it's John in his boxer shorshs!".

Reported it to library staff along with a few people I had seen walking around the library looking for a computer with more or less the same expressions on their faces: people who have things to do where as these fools are preventing us. It got firewalled for three days but that was it and the computers were less vacated than other times. But then it got unblocked and it all started again.

Anything that can be done or do we all just have to accept it now?

Why isn't it blocked completely in the run-up to exams and essay deadlines?

Its a real pain in the arse at times, spent thirty minutes in the library looking for a computer to print off a lab report, at least half of them were being used for bebo. And in the past, asking someone to let you on for a second to print something off usually results in them alt tabbing to some word document.

I wanted to get people to get them to block it. It's annoying and selfish of those little fools who stay online for 3 and four hours at a time (I've been in the study corner and saw the same two girls on the computer for 3 hours, on bebo... Sickening!) . Not to mention the fact that there are more of the sodding sods going to come into the college in September so the cycle will start again... If there could be measures made for a permanent ban on the site I'd go about it. But I'd need some sort of amount of signatures to have it banned altogether. In your opinion would anyone stand with me on it? (getting signatures etc for them to keep it permanent?)

No. i find it hard to believe that you people that are against bebo use the computer entirely for college related activities, I wouldn't mind being asked to leave if someone needed to use it, but as far as I see, theres nothing wrong with met aking a break from study and going on bebo for fifteen minutes

DCU must be the only college in ireland with bebo still unblocked, block it from lib pc's and enable it for laptops so that some students can access it on their own machine.

Bebo is a scourge, i cant wait till this fad is over

You and I both know the ones you see looking at bebo aren't being taken up by diligent students taking a break from their study to look at it. They're the airheads who spend practically all day on there.
In the run up to the end when all the computers are usually taken early in the day people shouldn't be using the computers for non-college work. It should be banned.

Was trying to get something printed off yesterday - had to wait for fifteen minutes for a computer. Alot were doing project work, but there were clearly a few just having their daily youtube / bebo browse. I don't know if a complete ban is the solution, but it really is getting ridiculous. If the library is quiet and there's a few free PCs / no queue, grand, bebo away. Otherwise, give up the PC for those that need it.

I don't know why people go to the library to watch you-tube or play on bebo?? why don't they just go home?? does it make them feel better, gets rid of some of the guilt?

Request that the sites be blocked. Simple.

Ok, maybe a ban on it near exam times but I don't think there should be an outright ban on it at all times, if theres a few spare computers then I think its fine

There's not spare computers though - there's upwards of a 20 minute wait at times, and always at least 5 or 6 twats on Bebo.

If people are stressed and having problems with keeping their concentration, the DCU campus caters for that in other ways. Instead of idle moments spent on a much-needed PC couldn't you, who disagree with me on this, take your leisure time to the sports grounds or to the gym? How about a walk to clear your mind?

There are many leisurely things you can do in DCU if you're tired from studying and want to talk with friends, every individual who attends DCU, I'm quite sure, has a mobile, at least those of the younger generation without doubt, do have one, so why not call your friends and do your cr*p talking in the canteen beneath? It doesn't take a degree to be considerate. I'm sure you can see when people genuinely need a computer, they'll stand and wait for you to become hungry from all that gossiping you do,and leave the computer.

You've not a leg to stand on whilst disagreeing with this one, I'm sorry.

    DCU is an educational establishment.

The library is not for you. Leisure plex I'm sure, caters for your needs if study is too much.

This issue was discussed over on Life.dcu.ie and there was actually some good debate on it. The thread can be found over here.

In terms of my feelings on the matter I'll just echo what I said on the above thread. The problem is not with Bebo, it's how the library staff handle the issue. Sure, the computers are there for academic use but I for one like to break up my work day with a quick stroll around the net. It may not be Bebo but as :| said, we should be entitled to take said break.

The point regarding leaving the PC to do other things is flawed also. Again as I said on the above thread if I was working on a PC and wanted to take a break but couldn't go to a fun/non academic site I'd simply lock the computer and take a stroll. Either way the PC is still out of action for other students.

a laptop and wireless card is the greatest investment you can make in college, esp for final year, then printing is the only problem

Its wrong that some airheads hog the library computers exclusivley for bebo and the like, but its a hard problem to tackle short of lining said airheads against a wall and spraying them with custard while shouting 'Stay off bebo!'.

I'd suggest a few signs that make them feel guilty about bebo i.e. "These computers are for work, do not use for bebo". It won't stop it, but it might reduce the problem.

Short of that, the custard idea would be a laugh :D

the printing isn't an issue - you can install the new programme from CSD and print wirelessly on campus.

Not on macs of yet you can't. You'd be very surprised at the amount of students with macs on campus, there's quite a number of them.

Speaking of Macs on Campus the Mezz is surprisingly empty these days so if you're stuck for a computer pop up there for one.
