Decided on Saturday that I wanted one of these so I'm really glad to see a highly positive review. Would like to see a review of one with functional autofocus though cos I kind of depend on it for what I want the camera for anyway.

Reckon it'll take a year to get the money together for it though. It's looking like 2999 sterling so definitely 4500E at the very best if I want to get it in Europe.

...but why would you want to do that? Next time I upgrade it's going to be to a 1 series and I know it'll be an excuse for a long weekend in new york (or hong kong of course)

I have been thinking the same thing too - but to me full frame is more important than fps so its gonna be a 2nd hand 1ds probably.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Roen

I decided not to go for one and went for the 5D instead, sod all the waiting around for a new model to come out. The ff goodness is what I wanted and the 1.6x crop of the 20D and it's 5fps are plenty for me.

But........reading the sentence in the hands-on from Rob Galbraith that goes...."the image quality is the best we've seen from a digital SLR, and except for one preproduction body glitch, it's also the best SLR we've ever shot with too" makes me wish I held out.
However, I'll enjoy the gear I have and try to hit it's limits before I upgrade.

I don't even know what most of that technical stuff means, but the image quality is amazing. I'd imagine some of the non-L lenses would be found out pretty quickly with that yoke, which means the true cost of the camera would be probably double what it retails for

why spend several grand on a marginal increase in image quality?

finally a camera to compete with a nikon (runs away laughing evilly)

seriously thought about the New York option but want the guarantee side of things to be unequivocal.

still going to be a year before the funds are there though.

afaik a canon warranty is worldwide (very open to correction on that). Either way I'd be getting a mack warranty of at least 3 years. They're definately worldwide!

(also I'd insure it up to the eyeballs, but that's an entirely different issue)

All of you should come to Vegas to buy :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭Valentia

The image quality is not relevant to me as they are all good. I'd love a camera that can follow a bird in flight without feeling like smashing it in frustration after it misses most of the shots from a burst. Provided the AF is sorted this is the boyo.

With the dollar/euro rate as it is you should be able to pick one up in B&H's for just over €3,300. That's cheaper than the 5D here. The warranty is NOT international but,as Rymus said, you can get a MACK warranty.

I reckon it will be well into next year before I consider buying one though.

At my age I have come to the conclusion that life is too shaggin short. I have never been able to afford any of the gear that I have bought but would rather worry and have it than worry and not. Irresponsible? YES!! :D

Horses for courses, depends on what you're into. I don't think it's a case of one or the other, it's a case of both.

do you need weather sealing and 10fps and that extra quality at 3200 and 6400 iso? if yes then the 1D, if not the 5D

for someone like me who shoots music in dark venues and weddings in dark churchs and reception rooms, the speed and low light ability would be better from the 1D as would the weather sealing for shooting in the lashing rain at music festivals

Well the Mack warranty is about €50 ... global .... and 3 years ... allows you to bring it to any Canon authorised repair centre ... in fact it is probably better than Canon's ... so I'd not be ruling NY option out on that basis ...

I have seen some full size shots from the MKIII at ISO 3200 and they are fantastic perfect for those of us who shoot in dark places with mixed lighting. I rekon when my company goes belly up at the end of the summer I will be purchasing one of these and using the 20D as back-up.

If only it were that simple, there are a lot of things to consider -

I really want the weather sealing ... but that entails buying L lenses also ... this suits some of the outdoor stuff I like to do ... advantage 1D but with a big additional price tag

Speed is not real issue as I will keep my 5fps 20d ... it has enough grunt ... adv 5d (sort of)

ISO is a big one for me also ... slight adv 1d

1D is a bit on the bulky and heavy side for travel photography ... (big adv 5d)

1.3 crop v FF ... Hmmmnnn ... This one is shifting back and forward in my mind ... 1.3 keeps things within the sweet spot of most lenses ... but FF is enticing though it probably just shows the flaws of your cheaper lenses more than anything else ... slight adv 5d ... though ask me next week and I could say big adv 5d ... a week later something else ...

Price +€800 (if you include the fact you don't buy a battery extender for the 1d) .... big adv 5d ... but then I never use common sense when buying toys :o

    AutoFocus ... Adv 1d

    Build ... big Adv 1d

Big bright screen... after the 20d's postage stamp this would be a breath of fresh air .... not sure how it compares to 5d ... suspect Adv 1d

12bit v 8 bit ... very enticing ... extra tonal range opens up new creative possibilities ... big Adv 1d

Pixels ... not an issue for me ... small adv 5d

Live review ... I know many see this as a gimmick ... but I have uses for it ... small adv 1d

Shaky sensor cleaning ... nice to have but not totally essential ... adv 1d

    sRAW ... hmnnn ... may find a use for it ... adv 1d ...

OK ... it looks like I'm talking myself into the 1d but it is the size and weight of it that poses the biggest single problem for me ... not great for travel, not discreet when walking along dodgy streets in far off places ... especially with the new hand baggage restrictions ... though I am investing in a multi pocket jacket that takes big lenses ... nobody said anything about wearing your carry on gear

For me I'd say 5D now and 1D on the next upgrade cycle in 3 years (when it will be cheaper and better) but if I made a living from photography it'd be hard not to buy a 1Ds...

P.S. 5D in Hong Kong currently approx 1675 euro for the body only. Couldn't get a price on any 1D though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,763 ✭✭✭Fenster

Definately, Mike...and anyone else who wants to try their hand at wedding photography around that time.

Eh, all this thread about the 1D and I haven't even mentioned it yet. Hah, it's definately aimed at wildlife/sports photographers and it'll probably be a "must" upgrade for a lot of pros.

Probably will have to reconsider the long zoom situation. I don't know.

I'm not going to think about it too deeply right now because already the camera is a scary amount of money...

I know what you mean - it was a huge step up for the 30D, 17-85mm IS, and a Sigma DG-500 flash, but I've honestly reaped what I've sown and hope to use them to pay my way in Vegas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,263 ✭✭✭✭Borderfox

1d MkIII with a 70-200 f2.8 IS and a set of waterproof's for myself. That will do nicely for what I use. I got caught in a downpour yesterday and used the faithful black bag.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Fionn

i've looked at all the reviews but i haven't slavered as much as what i thought i would..
it's quite the camera huh? so very enticing too with a price tag that perhaps some could just about get to.. :)
i've been spoiled with my own (now broken) 1 series camera, to be honest - everything else feels like a toy!
yep if i had the spondulicks i'd poney up for the MkIII as a back up to the 1DsII lol
    oh dreamy days!!

so we're all going to Fensters place in AZ? Boards Meet???
