Thought I'd post this up this evening so people know.
There's a new series on tommorow (Monday) evening at 9:30 fr the next few weeks dealing with various specialities in surgery. Tommorow is about 2 neurosurgeons.

It would be great to hear some feedback about the programme especially with the whole "Arrogant doc" "debate" that seems to be going on!

    From RTE
    About the Show

A new series, Surgeons uncovers the powerful human stories at the cutting edge of Irish medicine, looking at both the practitioners, and the patients that go under their knives.

This remarkable fly-on-the-wall documentary series - from the makers of Junior Doctors - offers up-close insights into real life and death situations, going into the operating theatre itself to show the pioneering and high-risk work carried out by Ireland's leading surgeons. Surgeons looks too at the daily working lives of these commanding, wilful, highly paid, yet formidably talented people.

The series, in four parts, also sheds light on many of the issues facing the health service today - waiting lists, public versus private practice, red tape, hospital politics.

Yea should be good, anyone know if the whole thing was made in Beaumont?

One of the surgeons in it is from Cork n the one tommorow. My college does its training in beaumont and I heard from older students that our professor of surgery was being filmed as well.

I think that the mater is where the one on heart surgery was filmed as that's the centre for cariothoracic surgery.

I'm looking forward to the first one (I'm not really interested in what happens below the neck :D)

This show tomorrow night will be particularly interesting in light of the state of neurosurgery facilities at Beaumont at the moment.

Ouch, I knew neurology was never Ireland's strongpoint (just count the number of stroke units in the country) but I didn't think it was that bad.

t-4 minutes if anyone wanted to catch it.

Saw most of it (flatmate came in to talk and get grossed out during it). Good program, even if it only barely touched the surface of the problems that the IMT article above highlighted.

Was hoping for a bit more gore to be honest! :o

Yea decent proper I suppose, and it did touch on the reasons behind some of the elementary propers to do with the waiting lists (cables not available etc)

I thought it was very interesting, made me realise i wouldnt have the stomach or the head to be a surgeon.

RTE seems to do these type of documentarys very well, same with juniour doctors and legal eagles.

I thought it was good, but it didn't go into a lot of detail and focused on the patients lives a bit much, compared to the surgeons' work and problems they come up with like facilities at Beaumont.
It would have been interesting to see more rollercoaster surgery dramatics as well, I mean that was neurosurgery - it's supposed to be one of the most exciting disciplines there is. Although the awake craniotomy was pretty cool.

One good thing about this programme is that it's a great reminder that you can possibly aspire to being more than the dreaded arrogant-golfer stereotype that can come across in the media about consultants i.e. they actually work and what they do is important. Not all doom and gloom ahead.

I wonder how many people debating in the arrogant doctors thread watched it?

I really enjoyed tonights episode. The program gave a great insight into the operations these guys perform. The 'awake craneotimy' procedure was fascinating. Mapping the different parts of the brain while the patient was awake to determine the parts responsible for speech was something else. Cant wait for next weeks episode on heart surgery.

Missed out on the series 'Junior Doctors', anyone have it recorded?

I saw some of that JD show but it was more about adjusting to life as a Junior Doctor that any particular medical stories. I dunno, I found it a little off putting and not very inspiring at all. But then I didn't watch the entire series.
