A mate of mine is having a problem with his machine, anyone any idea what it could be?

When I switch on the machine im getting nothing except the fan comes on and one of the led's on the motherboard is red. (it beeps sometimes)

So I assume the problem is one of the following -
    CPU
    RAM
    Motherboard

Anyone know how I could figure out which?

Is there a pattern to the beeping?

The beeping is after going away (that was only happening the odd time anyway). Does anyone have any idea what what the small red LED could mean?

Not without knowing anything about the computer.

What type is it? Make and model please.
Is there anything you can tell us about the motherboard, like make and model? Are you able to get into the BIOS? Does the computer POST at all?

It was hand built so theres no make. The motherboard is an ABIT-157-E2.

I was able to get into the BIOS after my first post (but not before), and I can't now. It's got messier, heres what happened (note my friends machine is the one with the problem) -

My mates graphics card will not work in my machine or his. My graphics card always works in my machine but only once or twice in his. When my card worked in his a message was appearing complaining about his processor (saying it was either unworkable or the settings were wrong), I was able to get into the BIOS and check these, they seemed fine.
I was also able to choose to ignore this message and continue and it booted into XP as normal.
Now my card will no longer work in his machine and the lights on the keyboard are not coming on either. But the fan on the processor runs and im still seeing the same red led on the board.

Do ye think it could just be a problem with the board (which also happened to fry his graphics card?). This pc was working perfectly this morning and there seems to be alot of parts going wrong all at once.

Its over my head at this stage.

Most Abit boards have a two-digit numerical LCD much like a digital clock on them that is used to display error codes - any sign of anything like that?
