ok, theres been a lot of talk here about the speed of the feeds offered by NTL

one only needs to look at the topic by "guitar 27" who thinks ntl are rubbish.
I was very impressed with the replies and helped me to discover a few questions that i have always wondered .

lets take his example of the man utd goal being celebrated 5 seconds before guitar27 was able to witness it! (where a friend on the other end of a phone conversation watching analogue was able to see a goal scored ,whilst guitar27 was delayed 5 seconds away on digital)

now if there is a 5 second delay between analogue and digital,then...

    1. What is the delay from actual real time to analogue ??????

and my second big query is ....

    2. What is the delay between "Actual Real Time" and radio reception ?

would be absolutely delighted to have these 2 questions answered.

    Many Thanks,

    Bernard Hopkins

Digital TV processing, by it's very nature, results in a delay. This is not unique to NTL. If a match is being simulcast on say, RTE and BBC, you will also see a delay between both feeds, MAinly because of the diverse uplinks etc being used. Delay is usually somewhere between 1 and 3 seconds. Factor in also if the two lads were communicating via a digital Cellphone network and it all adds up. A small price to pay IMHO.

thanks,...... but is there a big delay between the actual real time event and normal rte/bbc analogue ?

    thanks,

    There might be.
As almost all capture & distribution is Digital
Also they may have a "security delay" to be able to block "janet jackson events" and such before it goes out.

ill tell you why i ask,..........

i use a site called "BETFAIR" ,.... which lets you bet on a match as it happens.
    they call it "in running"

during the snooker matches, one person was able to back the winner of a contentious shot, before it appeared on the screen... clearing up huge amounts of money before it appeared on anybody's televisions !!!

i thought that maybe somebody who was actually there at the event may be able to witness the outcome a lot quicker than the person watching ANALOGUE tv ??????

must bring my lap-top to the next ireland international :) hehe

    HE may have been "lucky".
There is not that much of a delay on normal feeds. The Betting people always win (house percentages) no matter what happens and they know about mobile phones.

what baout radio ?.how instant is that ?

Fairly instant to cause feedback when callers would have their radio too loud.

But it depends. Its about 2 seconds or even less from what I have heard from the feedback you would hear. Watty would clarify this

With TV I knew of a delay alright especially during live events and such programmes like big brother.

Recently I was at a football match and there was a penalty awarded in the game, a mate of mine rang me to hear the atmosphere in the ground when the penalty was converted. From the moment the pen was scored and the moment it appeared on sky was almost instantly. Fractions of seconds rather than seconds, I would say.

thanks,.......... but i presume you were watching digital tv sky sports ?
then it should be about 2 and a half seconds slower than analogue to begin with ?

are you using sky package or ntl connection ?
