While it was nice to see Donegal win their first league title, I have to say that I thought the standard of football by both sides was not very good.

There was a lot of needless fouling by both sides, especially Donegal in the second half. They gifted mayo a number of easy frees in front of the goal, which kept Mayo in the game for long stages.

Dongeal should have won this game by a lot more than 3 points, but they did deserve their win.

I was there. a slight shower just ast the match was beginning, made things very slippery. Not a great match. Well done Donegal. It was good the see De La Salle from Waterford win the Hogan Cup and Omagh take the Croke Cup in the earlier matches.

Possibly to encourage a better attendance. There were 29,000 there but I think Croke Park needs 30,000 to break even. The amount of people arriving late was unbelievable considering that there were 3 games and a 4pm throw-in.

    Congratulations Donegal :D

The game was on live on TG4 - as were the two colleges games which were on before it.

Have to agree. Some finals have a nasty habit of fizzling out on the day and this was no better. On route to the final I would say thats about as bad as I've seen Donegal play.

I seen Mayo twice this year and again they were a lot better than todays performance.

Congrats to Donegal and bring on Sam

    terrible game

It wasn't the best game but, as a Donegal man, I couldn't care less. Up until yesterday, Donegal had lost every final they played in since 1992 and I was at quite a few of them. They even lost the Division 2 final last year to Louth. To take from soccer parlance here, I am happy to "win ugly".

Smashey, try be a Mayo man and then you can talk about losing finals.
Terrible match with lot of bad shooting from both sides.
Lot of fouls from Donegal that kept Mayo's score ticking over because they definetly weren't doing it from play.
I thought Donegal wanted it more in the end and thus won.
You are dreaming if you think they will win an All Ireland.
They would need to improve a lot from yesterday to have a chance.

I am not allowed discuss …

Mayo have had a few Connacht championships in that time.

Congratulations to Donegal on their win yesterday of the National League Final. They were clearly better than Mayo and they have the making of a good team. If they can maintain this momentum, then I'd expect a top-8 at least in the championship, which should be reasonably comfortable and then who knows what will happen from there. They havea very good coaching/man-management setup which is taking the same players further.

With the 'demise' of Tyrone and Armagh, and Dublin and Kerry showing cracks as well, its looking like a very open year, which is more good news for Donegal, and the sport in general. Expect a few surprises ...... but its looking like a good football season ahead for the summer.

Was at the match. Agree that the shower at the start made a mess of it as the pitch was ok for the colleges game beforehand but an icerink by the time the final was on.
Another final, another disappointment. Well not too bad overall considering we were missing David Brady, T Mort, Ronan McGarrity, Marty McNicholas and of course Ciaran Mac. Add to that the knocks Kevin O Neill and Kilcullen were bringing into the game and the U21 match on Saturday which pretty much ruled out all of them. So I think it was just a bridge to many against a very good Donegal team. We just didn't have it in the tank or the subs bench on a day when it was wet and the game went on for 80 mins (consider that Donegals last 3 points came from subs including Sweeeny - a brilliant sub to bring in).
Still we had some good perfromances Andy Moran, C Mort, Heaney, Nallen and K Higgins all worked as best they could. However worries in half back and midfield for the Championship. We need most of those players mentioned above back and fully fit to challenge for Sam this year.
Fair play to Donegal against any other team I would have been cheering for them.

poor enough game but some massive scores especially the 3 in injury time, well done donegal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭blackbelt

Well done Donegal.Poor enough match though,it was a stop-start affair.Moran played well but made a couple of mistakes by running into the donegal defence and missing some point opportunities.

As for Donegal, well they are certainly contenders for Sam this year.I was talking to many Donegal fans in town last night and they are more worried about Armagh than anyone else.

Some think Sam is already going to Donegal,it might but its better to peak in September instead of late April

I think that Donegal have shortened their odds from 80-1 to 10-1 for Sam according to Paddypower's book.

It will be interesting to see how the following evolves over the course of the championship:

    2-1 Kerry
    9-2 Tyrone
    11-2 Dublin
    8-1 Mayo
    10-1 Donegal
    14-1 Armagh
    16-1 Galway

Great end to the match we Donegal folk have been waiting a long time to celebrate a final victory, not going to get carried away though we are in the tough side of the Ulster Championship draw, still not recovered from Sunday had one of those nights last night!

Also thought there would have been more Mayo fans at the match the Donegal support was at least 2/1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭blackbelt

Well I can't speak so much for the match itself but I thought it was 50/50 but the Donegal support in Flannery's suggested otherwise :D

We were definetly outnumbered at the weekend one of the first times I've ever seen it to be honest. Usually we've great support.

Can't belive Dublin are shorter odds than both Mayo and Donegal for the Championship. Every time they've been in a big game over the last 3 years they've cracked and trust me they will crack when the pressure is on this year as well. I know Mayo mightn't have the best record in finals but they have preformed in pressure situations in Croker when they had to (Semi last year and 04 and the quarter in 04 all spring to mind)

I think this talk of an open year is a bit of wishful thinking. Sure Kerry always are "showing cracks", Dublin were a bit overrated imo last year, and as for the demise of tyrone and Armagh, not sure about that. Would it be a big surprise if tyrone/armagh won this years ulster final? All the best for Donegal and hopefully they can keep this momentum going.

Well, Kerry are always there or thereabouts and could of course win it. However, the won it last year and winning back-to-back is harder.

Tyrone have had a poorish league campaign. Of course they could win Ulster though.

Armagh are going through the biggest shake-up. They've had a lot of poor results. I would be very surpirsed if they won in Ulster, and shocked if they won Sam.

Dublin also had a far from stellar campaign in the league. They dont seem to be as good as last year, so who knows. They should win Leinster though.

I don't know how Donegal will do. They should make the top-8. At that stage, its all to play for depending on whether a county is coming through the qualifiers or meeting a 'weaker' qualifier county.

Overall, Kerry will deserve their favourite rating, but they are beatable, as are all the teams, and hence that seems fairly open to me. Not open to 10 teams, but 5 at least.

Nope as in I don't watch TG4 despite saying Dun na nGall abú

Nope as in I am such an amazing supporter that as well as not being arsed to go to the game I can't even be arsed to find out which channel it is on?????

Nope as in I (Wow Sierra) am invoved in some huge conspiracy to pretend the game was on TV when it wasn't.

    ??????????????

Anyway enjoy the moment you have actually missed -- I think the Championship will be a return to business as usual. Nice to see Eoin Mulligan back

Apologies its late and I'm slightly pissed and slightly(?) intolerant!!!!!!
